I watch with amusement the irritation in his eyes as he says roughly, “How long will you be?”

“Two hours. I’m meeting Adelaide Southgate to discuss the donation for the shelter.”

Kill says harshly, “Two hours at the most. Julian will accompany you.”

She smiles and then turns, rolling her eyes and dropping me a cheeky wink as she leaves.

I’m not sure how he managed it, but Killian scored big when he met Purity. I’ve never met a woman like her in my life. So unspoiled, so innocent and yet incredibly brave and able to put up with Kill’s shit. She deserves a fucking medal for it, but I can tell she is happy. Especially now she is carrying his child.

It’s a sobering thought and once again my mind switches to Allegra. I wonder what she will look like swollen with my child. It shocks me a little because I always vowed never to marry—until her. In fact, it’s as if my life was on hold until she walked into that alley and stole my heart.

“Lucas Stevenson.” Killian drags my mind to business, and I lean forward, desperate for information.

He chuckles softly. “It was an interesting evening. You have pissed him off so much it was enjoyable watching him lose his shit.”

“I wonder what his wife thought of that?” I pour myself a coffee and Kill grins.

“I could tell she was confused. He was on edge the entire time and kept snapping at her. Luckily, Purity managed the situation and took her off to the restroom, leaving me with her extremely irate husband.”

“I wish I had been there.” I really mean that, and Killian nods.

“Yes, it was enjoyable and to cut a long story short, he wants your head on a platter.”

“I’m sure.” I shrug and I love how Kill’s eyes gleam with vindictive rage as he hisses, “He dared threaten me. He told me that unless you are brought in line, he would call a meeting of the Dark Lords and bring our exclusion forward. He would have you up on a murder charge and make sure you get life with no hope of parole. He will ruin our operation and put word out that Gold Hawk Enterprises is finished, and any contracts I have will be withdrawn.”

“And his conditions?” I’m mildly interested, knowing how my brother will have reacted to those demands and Kill growls, “Our silence. Return his daughter to her family and walk away. To keep the hell out of his way and his family and, how did he put it, crawl back into the gutter where we belong.”

Killian is angry. I see it in his eyes, and I almost pity Lucas Stevenson for what he has unleashed. Kill is becoming the respectable face of our business but is still the don in waiting of the Vieri mafia and threats like those will not go well for the man making them.

“So, your plan is…?” I ask, spreading marmalade on a croissant and he sneers, “Destroy him, his family and his reputation.”

“Business as usual then.”

“Of course.” He pours himself some more coffee, black as he likes it, and says with an evil glint in his eye.

“Saint has been investigating your problem.”

Now he has my full attention and I fix him with a dark stare of my own.

“And?”

“Do you remember a few months ago when Domenico Ortega was arrested on suspicion of murder? The victim was found outside his mansion with their heart cut out.”

“I remember.”

“Well, it appears it became a trend and was done in the name of the Dark Lords.”

He sighs irritably. “Mario Bachini was going rogue and using our good name for rituals involving rape, torture, and murder. The Ortegas dealt with him and his miserable father, our uncle Carlos.”

“So, you think someone is copying that? The heart thing is to prove a point. Someone who knows the history, someone who knew the Matassos.”

“I do.” He sips his drink and, as he sets it down, he shakes his head. “Gina reported back regarding Jefferson.”

“And?”

“He’s been talking to Freddie Connor.”

“That two-bit villain. Risky.”
