“I’m sorry, angel. Please don’t go.” He whispers and I say sadly, “You have nothing to apologize for. I’ll be in touch and…” My voice breaks. “I’m sorry, dad.”

I make to leave and as I pass my mom, I say bitterly, “I never want to see you again.”

As I leave, her pitiful cries follow me and yet I couldn’t give a fuck. It will take a very long time for me to forgive her and right at this moment, I’m not sure if I ever will.

CHAPTER40

SHADE

We waste no time and head to the finest hotel Washington offers, and I think Allegra is in a state of shock. She is rigid and unresponsive, merely staring out of the window, her small hand clasped firmly in mine.

I know better than to coax it out of her because I understand a little of what she is going through.

It’s something I would do. Retreat to heal. I keep everything close and let nobody in. We are too alike in that respect and so I give her privacy and catch up with the texts coming in.

Killian is on the case for the Constantine brothers and his is short and sweet.

I had a call with Dimitri. We have nothing to worry about and everything to gain. Relax, we’ll talk on Monday.

The next is from Heather.

“Forensics identified the heart as the missing one belonging to Taylor Sutherland. The man who retrieved the holdall was a homeless drunk who was paid fifty dollars to collect it. He has no leads and tells us it was a guy who stopped by the bridge and asked if anyone wanted to earn easy money. He couldn’t remember anything about him except that he wore a pinstripe suit.

Fuck.

I lean back and hate the feeling of losing control. Whoever this man is, is always one step ahead of us and it’s seriously pissing me off.

A text comes through from Kyle who is in the passenger seat ahead and he forwards a text from the agency we use for various business shit.

The tickets for Tuesday’s masquerade went on sale this morning. They are now sold out.

I stare at it in disbelief. We released two hundred tickets priced at five hundred dollars each. That’s without drinks and extras. This night is a success on ticket sales alone.

I turn to Allegra and snap her out of her mood in an instant.

“Your event has sold out.”

“Excuse me?” She turns sharply and stares at me with shock.

“Your ads have worked. God knows how you got them out so quickly, but we’re sold out. Job done.”

“But...” Her eyes are wide, and she tears her phone from her purse and scrolls through the texts.

“I don’t believe it.” She stares at me in shock.

“Alice placed a few ads that went viral. It appears this is the hottest ticket in town.”

I love that her face breaks into a huge grin and the pain leaves her eyes and is quickly replaced by excitement.

“I only told her to run the ads last night after I got your approval. They must have only been out for a few hours. I never knew it would be this easy.”

She shakes her head and quickly dials a number, her face flushed with pride.

“Alice.” She says with excitement. “I’ve just heard we’re sold out. What happened?”

She listens with delight as her assistant speaks and she squeals. “You’re a genius. You really are the best. This is all down to you, and I’ll make sure Miss. Solomon knows.”

She giggles and then says happily, “I can’t wait until Monday. We did it. Thank you so much.”
