We headto dinner at the exclusive roof top restaurant that is the talk of Washington. It is frequented by politicians, high-ranking officials and movie stars. I’m guessing they aren’t used to a circus quite like mine and the curious gazes of the other diners follow us as we make our way to the table set by the window.

The fact we come with an entourage of men in black suits who position themselves by the exit and at nearby tables, tells them something unusual is happening and they stare at us with curiosity, causing Allegra’s friend to grin with excitement.

“I feel like the First Lady.” She whispers, “I don’t believe it. You see that man over there with the woman in the white fur coat? That’s my boss.”

We follow her eye and I notice an older man dressed in a tuxedo with a slim, petite blonde on his arm, shrugging out of a fur coat and dripping in diamonds.

“I’m guessing that’s his wife.” Allegra says in awe, and Cecilia laughs out loud. “That’s his secretary. Marcia Billings. It’s well known they are fucking their way through the working day and obviously after hours, too.”

“Does his wife know?” Allegra whispers, her eyes wide with shock and Cecilia shrugs. “Probably, but she’s too busy fucking the pool boy to care.”

I watch with amusement as they burst out laughing and I love seeing Allegra so happy. It’s a pleasure knowing she has forgotten the shit we are wallowing right now.

I decide I like her friend. She is right up Kyle’s alley. Tall, beautiful brown skin, with intriguing dark eyes. Her hair is dyed blond and is dancing in waves across her shoulders and her slim figure is disguised by a slinky electric blue silk dress. She is wild, untamed and exactly how he likes his women, and I note the impatience in his eyes as he stares at her. I know that like me, he only wants to be fucking right now, but we need to eat, and Allegra needs some time with her friend.

So, I let them chat about shit and nod to Kyle in the direction I’m staring.

His amusement matches my own because striding into the restaurant is the man of the hour himself. Judge Lucas Stevenson and his long-suffering wife, Mary.

They ignore the waiter and head straight to our table and I watch Allegra’s face tighten with anger when her uncle stops and says angrily, “A word please, Allegra. Outside.”

To her credit, she gives nothing away and just smiles pleasantly.

“Uncle Lucas, Aunt Mary, what a coincidence.” She turns to Cecilia and says happily, “Do you remember my aunt and uncle, Cessy?”

She nods and smiles in return. “It’s so nice to see you again.”

They remember their manners at least and greet her politely and then Allegra turns to Kyle and says, “Kyle, this is my uncle. This is Kyle, and this…”

She turns to me and reaches for my hand, smiling lovingly into my eyes. “Is my boyfriend, Shade.”

I nod to the enraged couple, loving the fact they are among their peers and can’t create the scene I’m guessing they are desperate for.

“Um, well…” Mrs. Stevenson is trying so hard to deal with this disaster and she turns to her angry husband and says softly, “Lucas, please go and put the poor waiter out of his misery while I have a quick word with Allegra.”

She addresses the table.

“You don’t mind if I borrow her for a moment, do you?” She fixes me with a steadfast look, and I shrug, watching Allegra’s reaction to that. She merely nods politely and pushes back from the table, making a show of kissing me defiantly provocatively, before saying, “I won’t be long.”

As she leaves with her aunt, I nod to the nearest guard, who stands and follows them out of the room. Her friend stares at Kyle and shakes her head, whispering, “That’s a conversation I’d love to listen in on.”

It makes him laugh and as I watch Allegra walk out of the room, I hate the fact she’s no longer in my view, so I nod to another guard to secure the exits. This is a well-rehearsed drill that we have used many times before. When we secure a restaurant, we lock it down tight and there is no way in hell Allegra will make it out of this hotel without me by her side.

I glance across the room at Judge Stevenson who is typing furiously into his phone, his anger laid bare for the entire restaurant to register. I’m guessing this is no happy coincidence. He knows their secret is out and is in the process of dealing with it.

Well, so am I and as I lean back and lift the glass of bourbon to my lips, I flash him a knowing wink as I drain the glass in one.

CHAPTER43

ALLEGRA

Iam so angry. Seething, in fact, because the minute I saw my uncle I wanted to be sick. I can’t even look at him, and it took a superhuman effort on my part to keep things civil.

When Aunt Mary requested a word, it was an easy yes because it removed him from the situation.

We head into the bar and Aunt Mary directs me to a secluded booth and I notice Shade’s men watching us at a respectful distance. It comforts me knowing he is protecting me even now and I will do everything to protect what we have.

“What’s going on Allegra. Why the rebellion?”
