Chapter 27

I can't believe today is the day—I'm getting married.

My gaze turns to my reflection in the mirror. I'm so in love with this A-line lace embroidered dress. I turn my body and peek over my shoulder and smile at the stunning lace backside, and when I turn back to the front, I touch the purple flower crown in my braided updo.

By the end of this day, I'll be Mrs. Brown.

On Charlotte's birthday, Nick asked when I wanted to get married. I said after the baby was born. He explained he couldn't wait that long. So after he asked me if I trusted him, and I said yes, he said he would set up our wedding within two months. I thought it was impossible. But when Nick wants something, nothing's impossible. My heart skips a beat, thinking of him.I can't wait to see that handsome man in a suit.

We're holding the wedding ceremony at Nick's parents' house. Behind their home lies a large open field with a pond. John and Martha know the owner, and after asking, they permitted us to hold our ceremony there. We've chosen a small wedding. Only our close friends and family and Nick's closest business associates are here today.

As I gaze through the window, I can see parts of the enormous tent for the ceremony behind the trees. Suddenly, feelings from the depths of my psyche rise and awaken my emotions.

"What is wrong, Emma?" Martha asks when she walks in, and she notices my inner struggle.

I let out a deep breath, and with a constricted voice, I whisper, "Thoughts of my parents came rushing through my mind."

Her face gets a thoughtful expression, and as she steps beside me, she takes my hand in hers while making eye contact in the mirror.

"I can understand it's hard. Because every woman wants their parents at their wedding. But let me tell you this, my dear. John and I have prayed that our Nickolas would find a woman like you. You and Charlotte have completed him and this family. If it's any consolation, you're like a daughter to John and me."

My eyes fill with tears as she says this.

"Now, give me a hug, sweetheart."

I swing my arms around Martha and give her a tight hug.

"Thank you, Martha. I couldn't ask for better grandparents for my children. You and John have opened your heart to Charlotte and me from the beginning. You two are an example for Nick and me."

Now it's Martha whose eyes get watery.

"Mommy, are you ready? I want to see your dress," Charlotte shouts through the door. Martha and I giggle at her impatient voice.

"Okay, let's show your dress to the girls."

I turn and walk to the door. Then, with a bright smile, I lower the handle and swing it open.

"Oh, Mommy, you are so pretty!" Charlotte shouts while rushing to me. She stops in front of me and touches the dress with her fingers.

"I want your dress."

I giggle at the pouty lip she gives me.

"But your dress is stunning, cupcake."

Charlotte wears a pink dress with flower patterns and beads on the front. Her hair is loose and flowing around her face.

"Don't worry, Charlotte," Bella remarks. "One day, far from now, you may get married, and then you can wear your mom's dress."

She jumps. "Yes, I want that. Can I wear your dress when I'm old like you?"

The room fills with laughter. "Sure, sweetheart."

Alisha, Bella, and Amanda come towards me. "Oh my god, Emma, you're stunning. That dress is perfect," Bella states. Both Bella and Amanda wipe away a tear.

Alisha takes my hand and smiles widely. "Nick will have a tent in his pants when he sees you because you're not gorgeous. You’re fucking hot."

Everybody, including Martha, laughs at her straightforward reaction.
