Chapter 16

"Angel... Wake up." A warm hand caresses my face and hair.

"Hm…"

"Emma, it's 5 am... I need to leave in twenty minutes."

"What?" My eyes part and take in a fully dressed Nick, sitting on top of the covers, staring at my sleepy face.

"Why don't you give me a kiss and go back to sleep?"

"No, of course not," I say with a drowsy voice. I stretch my limbs and pull myself up in a seated position. "I forgot it's Monday morning."

"Next time I stay over before going on a business trip, remind me to set the alarm earlier, so I can wake you and do naughty things before leaving." His thumb traces the outline of my mouth in a slow, seductive way.

"When will you return?" I ask, moping and looking at my bedsheets.

He lifts my chin. "If everything goes well, I'll be back on Friday night. I'll call you as soon as I arrive in New York. Give Charlotte a hug and a kiss."

"I'm going to miss you."

"Not as much as I'm going to miss you, Emma."

He gets up, and I jump out of bed. "Wait. I'll brush my teeth, and then I'm going to make you a coffee."

Minutes later,Nick pins me between him and the counter. "Not being able to touch you for five days is going to be a living nightmare. So let me taste you before I go." He slides the bathrobe off my shoulders and plants his lips on my bare skin.

"Your… Coffee."

"Not important. This is a better energy boost for my system than any cup of caffeine," he whispers while pushing the silky fabric further down. A wave of heat rushes through me like a wildfire.

"Nick..."

"I'll make sure you won't forget me." He kisses me with fierce passion, pulling my bottom lip between his teeth and tugging it before releasing it.

"You're my woman, Angel. Nobody else. Do you hear me?"

I push against his chest and glance up to find a wild and raging fire brewing in his eyes.

"Where is this coming from? You know I'm not interested in other men."

The flames in his dark irises calm as I say this. Is he associating him leaving with Cindy's betrayal? I grab his face between my hands and let his forehead touch mine.

"I'm not her! I'll never do that to you, Nick. When you return, I'll be here in this kitchen waiting for you."

"Promise," he mumbles, closing his eyes.

"I promise."

He lets out a deep sigh and presses his mouth on mine. After another set of kisses that make my toes curl, he lets go and walks out. Standing on the threshold, he turns his head, and while his warm orbs penetrate mine, he says, "See you soon, Angel."

I bring my bathrobe back over my shoulders and I watch through the living room window how he gets in his car and drives off. God, I miss him already.

With a lump in my throat, I go back to my empty kitchen. What am I going to do? I'm too awake to go back to bed. As I see my notebook, a smile forms on my lips. Since I talked with Clair, way too many ideas have been swirling in my head, so I grab it and start writing all these new recipes. Seated with a coffee at the kitchen table, I scribble till the clock ticks seven o'clock. Putting the notebook away, I go back to my room to get dressed before waking up Charlotte.

"Morning, cupcake. Time to get up for school." After placing a kiss on her head, she opens her intense blue eyes. While she yawns and stretches, I pick out and place a set of clothing for her to wear on the stool next to her bed. "I'll be in the kitchen making your lunch and breakfast. Don't go back to sleep, sweetie. Otherwise, you’ll need to rush when I wake you up again."

"Mh-hmm," she mumbles, with her head still on the pillow.
