"That bastard took my father!"

"What? Who is your father?"

David stares at Cole with eyes that don't seem to blink often enough. "Jeremy is my father."

My mouth falls open while pressing my hands to my chest. Good lord. The kind and bright smiling housekeeper is this psycho's dad?

Suddenly David starts talking. "I was ten when he started working for the wealthy Walker family. He would come home and talk about the talented Walker boy. For years I had to hear stories about how smart he was." His words trickled in candy-sweet loathing.

"My father pretended to love us, but it was a lie. He was merely awaiting his chance to get rid of us, and that came when Gregory Walker died. Shortly after that, my dad dumped my mom in a mental hospital, telling my sister and me she had a mental disorder. But that is a lie. My mom is fine. The real reason he put her there was because he wanted Cole as his son and Mrs. Walker as his wife. I shunned the bastard from my life, and for years, I was okay with that. But then, I found you," he says, shifting his attention back to me, and I observe how his eyes get a dreamy expression.

"You looked so stunning dancing in that red dress, and I knew you were mine. Buthehad to interrupt our conversation. Whenheforced me to leave you, I waited outside and watched you leave the building. Minutes later, he walked out, and I followed him because there was something about him that felt familiar. And when I found out he wasthefucking Cole Walker, I knew he was doing it again, but now he wanted to steal my precious doll face from me."

I glance at Cole. He stares at David, who’s staring back with pure malice. This is a delicate matter, and after a deep breath, I place my hand on the glass in front of David and speak.

"I’m sorry for what happened to your family, David. But you should remove the tape off Cole's lips and listen to what he has to say."

"I don't need to hear his opinion. Everything coming out of his mouth is a lie."

God, the hatred floating through the air is smothering.

"Please, David," I say in my most caring voice. "I would like to hear what Cole has to say for himself."

David's eyes study me. The way his face lit up when I said please makes it clear he likes it when I take an obedient role.

"Fine," he coos with adoration.

Acid burns in my throat as I swallow my disgust, but I force a smile on my face as I glance up at him. Suck it up. I need to let him believe that I'm on his side. Maybe that way I can get us out of this hellhole.

"Thank you so much, David."

David grabs the remote and pushes a button, and Cole's door unlocks. As soon as he turns and makes his way to the room, I make eye contact with Cole, who's glaring at me. I shape my hands and fingers into a heart. He nods, letting me know he understands, and when David enters, I pray he won't hurt my man again. He stops in front of Cole and speaks.

"You only talk with my permission. Otherwise, I'll put this back to shut you up. Is that clear?"

Cole nods, and with one hard yank, David removes the tape. Cole's face twitches when part of his facial hair is ripped off. Now that his mouth is free, his tongue darts over his cracked lips.

"You're wrong when you said that your father doesn't love you."

David laughs creepily and spins around to face me. "What did I tell you, doll face? Everything coming from his mouth is a lie."

"Stop calling her doll face, you asshole."

In one swift motion, Cole's face twists sideways as David punches his jaw with full force. I let out a yell of anguish.

"Did I permit you to speak?"

"Fuck you."

David hits him twice more, and I scream from my core. "Shut up and listen to him, you goddamn fool."

David chuckles. "Did you hear that? My precious doll face finally acknowledges that you're a fool," he says with a smirk. "Guess she sees I'm much better for her than you will ever be."

God, this man is a plain nutcase. I said it intending to get my stubborn man's attention. But if he believes I'm on his side, let's leave it that way.

Cole looks at me, and I plead with my eyes. Please stop getting yourself into more trouble. He's stubborn, and his annoyed face shows that he's not capable of doing that. So preventing him from more pain and trying to gain David's trust, I say, "You're right, David. Shut that fool's mouth."

David's eyes twinkle. He pulls out a long piece of white fabric from his back pocket and smiles as he turns to Cole. "Guess she's on my team now, Walker."
