I gawk at her sad face and trembling lower lip, and my brain wishes to explode as it interprets her reaction. I shake my head.

"No!" I shout. I force myself into a seating position and grunt loud as my muscles protest at the movement, but I ignore the shooting pain. "Get this off me," I say with a groan, pointing to the IV and the beeping heart monitor.

"Mr. Walker. You need to lie down."

I scowl at the nurse, who takes hold of my shoulder. She raises an eyebrow. "Stop it! I'm here to help, but if you choose to be a difficult patient, I'm going to be your nurse from hell."

"I've been there already."

"Cole! Alisha is alive. So lie your fucking stubborn nasty ass back in bed," Brian booms to catch my attention while grasping my other arm.

I quit my protest as his words land.

Are they telling the truth?

"It's true, Dad. Alisha is okay," Sam says as she touches my hand. When I meet her gaze, there's nothing but honesty. "Please lie back, Dad," she pleads.

"Listen to that smart daughter of yours, Mr. Walker."

My body sinks into the mattress, and I let out a long breath.

"That's better," the nurse expresses while gazing at my lowering heart rate.

"She's alive," I mumble.

"Yes, she is. She came out of surgery three hours ago. Her parents are with her," Bella clarifies.

"When can I see her?" I shift my attention to the nurse.

"Mr. Walker, I'm going to make a deal with you," she says with a no-bullshit stare. "If you behave, I'll get a physician to examine you as soon as possible. And if he thinks you're up for it, you can visit Miss McQueen."

I nod, staring at the door. "Fine." When she doesn't move, I shrug. "What are you waiting for? Get me a doctor."

The woman shakes her head but grins. "Girl, you've got one headstrong father."

Samantha giggles. "Yeah, I know. But he's the best."

"Easy, bro,"Brian and Nick say simultaneously as I slide out of bed with their support.

"You heard the doc. You need to take it easy."

I scowl at both my friends.

"Tell me one more time to take it easy, and you will need your own hospital bed."

Brian chuckles. "Oh, really? You think you can bulldoze us in this state? You look like you got sucker-punched by Rocky Balboa himself."

"Jeez, thanks," I say, exchanging a look with the guys. "Honestly though, how would you act if you were in my shoes, and it was Emma or Amanda lying in the hospital, and they say take it easy?"

Brian and Nick stay quiet for a moment before they nod in understanding.

"Okay, let's get rolling," Nick says, pointing at the door.

I tap my fingers on the armrest as Brian wheels me through the long halls. I've got two bruised ribs, a broken nose, and a minor fracture in my cheekbone, but I don't care. What bugs me is that my lady has been fighting for her life while I was sleeping. The doctor explained that I collapsed at the warehouse because of emotional, mental, and physical stress and trauma. And that I need to take it easy and get enough rest. Well, fuck rest. The only thing I want and care for is to see Alex.

We come around a corner, and my eyes settle on Samantha, speaking to Alisha's parents. Right away Clair sees us coming and alerts her husband by touching his shoulder and pointing my way. I lower my gaze.

What am I going to say? How mad will they be? Their daughter is here because of me.
