When Brian stops near them, I do the only right thing. "I'm sorry," I say with a lump in my throat. "I never..."

Two arms wrap around my shoulders and hug me.

"Thank you for saving her, Cole," Clair says in a clear tone.

"Huh?" I let out.

She pulls back and takes my hand. "Without you, my sweet girl wouldn't have survived."

I glimpse at Jim, who continues as he stops beside his wife. "The doctor and the police told us that even with your injuries you were giving her CPR and tried to stop the bleeding the best you could. If you hadn't done that, she would not have lived. So, thank you."

I look up at Clair. "If anybody should say thank you, it should be me. She and I have been through hell, but it's your daughter who's the heroine," I say as I stare at my bruised wrists. "I was tied to a chair for five days; I was completely helpless. Alisha is the one who risked her life to save mine. I told her to save herself, but the stubborn woman refused to leave me behind." A lump sets in my throat thinking of how David tried to kill her. "She fought with everything she had and killed that monster. And also in four-inch heels."

Clair grabs my face and wipes a tear from my cheek. "That sounds like our girl. When my daughter loves somebody, she fights with her heart and soul to keep and protect them, and that is what she did."

"How is she? What are her injuries?"

She lets out a tired huff. "She'll make it. But the stab wound she had was severe. The bleeding was coming from her kidney, and they were forced to removed it."

"Fuck," I whisper angrily, as I slam my hands down on the metal arm holders.

The door to Alisha's room opens, and Amanda walks out. "She’s waking up and asking for you, Cole."

"Okay," Clair says out loud with a grin. "Let's give my daughter what she asks for."

Brian wheels me inside as Amanda holds the door open. My heart is a raging sea of emotions the moment she comes into sight. My friend places the chair right next to the bed and leaves the room. My eyes roam over Alex, who's lying still under the white sheets. I gently take her hand and brush my hairy jawline over her knuckles. Straightaway, the unique fragrance of her skin eases my tortured mind, and streams of relief float through me when her soft, melodic voice whispers my name.

"Cole?"

Her lashes part, and she blinks.

"Hey, Alex."

Her head slowly turns, and the second her green jades meet my blue depths, our souls make a bridge. No words are needed. We speak in silence, and my heart composes a synergetic melody at the sight of her lips melting into a smile as soft as the morning light.

I grunt while hoisting myself out of the chair and parking my ass next to her on the bed. Her hand comes up, and she brushes her fingertips over my mouth.

"We made it?" she asks, while delicately caressing my still bruised face.

I lean in and press my forehead against hers and murmur. "Yeah, we did it, baby. Thanks to you." Not able to resist, I sweep my lips along hers and sigh. "I love you so goddamn much."

A short cough gets my attention, and when I peek over my shoulder, the nurse who came to my room stands behind the bed, smiling at us.

"Okay, Mr. Walker, enough exercise for today. Please, sit back in the wheelchair so I can check the wound of Miss McQueen."

I cringe in pain when I move.

"You've got one stubborn ass man. He's been in trouble ever since he woke up," she says when I drop back in the chair.

I wink at my girl, whose lips curl higher. "You've seen nothing yet," she mumbles. "And frankly, I find it hot."

The nurse chuckles. "Now, how are you feeling?"

"Like they ran me over with a truck. God, it hurts here," she says, placing her hand on her side.

"Yeah, that's understandable. I'll give you extra painkillers. But first, let me check out the bandage."

She stops next to the bed and lifts the sheets. Alisha peeks down and frowns. "What did they do?"
