Then Butch realized his cheek was wet.

He caught Sol’s croak as he tried to speak, and his mom was crying again, but all he could think of was that he was standing in his mom’s kitchen and his dad was hugging him.

Crying.

He could even believe his dad loved him.

Then Dad let go of him, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. “We’ve got so much to talk about, son.”

Talk about an understatement. They had thirty-four years of catching up to do.

Mom cleared her throat. “Brian isn’t alone, sweetheart.”

Dad frowned. “He isn’t?” Then he stared at Sol. “Who’re you?”

Sol held his hand out. “Sol Davenport, sir. I went to Natrona County High School with your son.”

They shook. Dad gazed at him, perplexed. “And why are you here?”

Before Butch could get a word out, Mom said with a smile, “He’s Brian’s boyfriend.”

Dad gaped at her. “You’ve got to be kidding.”

Mom grinned, her hand held out, palm facing up. “Now pay up.”

He ignored her, and took Sol’s hand once more. “The two of you aren’t planning on going anywhere right now, are you?”

Sol glanced at Butch, who smiled.

“No sir, there’s nowhere else we need to be. We’re gonna stay a while.”

THE END
