A nod from Novak. “I did, but only once.”

Teddy looked at Mori, who shook his head.

“I scooted it back into the bag with a pen.”

“Good. Let me take it out.”

Holding on to the drive through the plastic, Teddy eased the connector end out and plugged it into the port on the computer. An icon appeared on the screen. Teddy clicked it.

The thumb drive contained a single video file. He opened it and clickedplay.

Like yesterday’s video, Rebecca was once again sitting on the cot. The only differences were that the number on the wall had been changed to a three, and one of her cheeks was redder than the other.

Novak stared at the screen. “Mr. Barnett, we’ve got to find her. Now.”

“My contact is making progress.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means he’s doing everything he or anyone else can do to find her.”

“But what if it’s not enough?”

Teddy’s phone buzzed with a text from Ben Bacchetti.

Call me ASAP.

“I understand your concern. But my friend is your best chance at freeing her. I need to make a call. Excuse me for a moment.”

He stepped into the hallway and called Ben.

“What is it?”

“Apparently, someone has been keeping tabs on you. When you left, he broke into your room. Matthew stopped him before he could do much, though.”

“Matthew who?”

“Matthew Wagner. Stacy’s new friend.”

“What was he doing there?”

“He was in the bar when he noticed a guy watching you when you left and followed him up to your suite.”

“Which suite?”

“Billy’s.”

“Matthew must be bucking for a role in our next superhero movie.”

“We don’t do superhero movies.”

“Someone should tell him that.”

“The police want to talk to you.”

“Are they there now?”

“Yes.”
