“Andrew has been a trusted member of my staff for years. He is... he is a friend. I may be furious with him right now, but I understand why he did what he did. I don’t want his family to die because of my problems with Zoran Janic.”

“Are you asking me to save them?”

“Yes.”

“You realize I can’t be in two places at one time.”

“I thought that perhaps a man such as yourself would know others who might be able to help. Please. I’ll pay whatever it costs.”

“I can’t promise you anything. But I’ll look into it.”

“Thank you.”

After Teddy arrived back at his suite, he called an old friend.

“This can’t be who I think it is.” Vesna Martic’s tone was both amused and surprised. A former Bosnian intelligence operative, she and Teddy had worked together many times when he’d still been in the CIA.

“That depends on who you think it is.”

“Word on the street is that you’re dead.”

“Consider this a call from the afterlife, then.”

“I hope you’re not reversing the charges.”

“You do still owe me for that little scrape I got you out of last time I saw you.”

“Which was payback for me keeping you out of prison the time before that.”

“Why, Vesna, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Of course you don’t.” She snorted a laugh. “You’re going to ask me for another one of your favors, aren’t you? One that you’ll conveniently forget about later?”

“Yes, a favor. But it’s large enough I don’t think I’ll be able to forget it.”

“Why do I have the sudden urge to hang up?”

“How’s your knowledge of Balkan area crime syndicates?”

“Better than most.”

“Then I’m guessing you know who Zoran Janic is.”

Her tone turned icy. “If you’re asking me to do something for him, I’ll end this conversation right now.”

“Not for him.Tohim.”

Silence, then, “I’m listening.”

The next morning, Teddy checked the facial recognition search he’d started running last night. When he’d taken a look before falling asleep, there had been no results. This time, however, he had a potential match.

The second he saw the person’s picture, he knew he’d found the identity of his intruder. The man looking back at him was identical to the man in the security footage.

The match’s name was Sava Kordo. He had a long arrest record and outstanding warrants from several European countries, but had never been convicted.
