“The man who broke into my room?”

“Yeah. He was pretty far away, so I can’t be sure. But it sure looked like him.”

“What time was this?”

“Maybe half an hour ago? Around five-thirty?”

“Thank you, Matthew. I’ll keep an eye out for him.”

Teddy watched him walk away, knowing without a doubt now that Matthew was hiding something. Not only had Matthew been acting cagey throughout their conversation, but there’s no way he had seen the ghost of Kordo at the pool.

It wasn’t just the obvious lie. Teddy’s well-honed senses were shouting that Matthew was trying to create a distraction. But from what, he had no idea.

Back in his suite, Teddy called Mike Freeman and told him what had gone on that day.

“I’m sure no one has ever told you your life is dull,” Freeman said. “But thereissomething to be said about waking up in the morning and not worrying about potentially dying before the end of the day.”

“I never worry about that. Either it happens or it doesn’t. And so far, still alive.”

“There’s always a first time.”

“You mean last.”

“You say tomato... Do you think Rebecca’s kidnappers will send someone else after you?”

“I think there’s a decent chance. Which is why I need your men on set to keep an eye out for anyone suspicious. If they spot someone, let me know. Whatever we do, we need to be sure to take him alive this time.”

“I’ll let Rivera know.”

“Thanks. One more thing. I’d like you to do a background check on Matthew Wagner. In addition to his part in the shooting the other day, he’s also the guy who stopped the intruder in my room.”

“Is he now? That’s quite a coincidence.”

“It could be just that, but there’s something not right about him.”

“I’ll get some people on it.”

After hanging up, Teddy headed into the bathroom to wash off the dust and dry sweat that still clung to him from his descent to Kordo’s car.

He was halfway undressed when his phone buzzed. He checked the screen and hit the speaker button. “You’re up early.”

“More like I haven’t gone to sleep yet,” Vesna said. It was barely four a.m. in Croatia. “We know where Janic is keeping Vulin’s family.”

“They’re still alive?”

“As best we can tell, yes.”

“Do you think you can free them?”

“Teddy, my friend. It sounds like you are doubting me.”

“My apologies. I forgot for a moment who I was talking to.”

“That’s better.”

Thirty minutes after hanging up with Teddy, part one of Vesna Martic’s two-part plan to rescue Andrew Vulin’s family commenced.
