Teddy’s phone began to vibrate with a call. The name on the screen readKYLE HANSEN.

“I just finished looking through Matthew’s car.”

“And?”

“I found a syringe kit in the glove compartment, and a couple bottles of clear liquid. No labels.”

“Is that so?”

“I can send you a picture.”

“Later. Was there anything else?”

“Yeah.” The way Hansen said this, Teddy knew whatever it was bothered the security officer more than the syringes. “Have you seen those flyers people have been handing out the last couple days? The one about the missing person?”

That was not what Teddy had been expecting Hansen to say. “For Justin... something?”

“Justin Rogers.”

“Right. I have. There was one on my car. Why?”

“I found something in Matthew’s trunk that belonged to Rogers. A button that says ‘I love you Tessa.’ ”

“That could belong to anyone. I’ve seen dozens around the set.”

“Not this one. It has a picture in the background of Rogers and Tessa. And it’s the same button he’s wearing in the photo on the flyer.”

Teddy closed his eyes for a moment, trying to recall the flyer. One of the things that had kept him alive in the years during and after his time in the CIA was a combination of an excellent memory and attention to detail. And though he’d only looked at the piece of paper for a fewseconds, he could see the photo of Justin in his mind and recalled the unique button.

The coincidence was too obvious to ignore. This wasn’t definitive proof of anything, but Teddy had a bad feeling growing in his gut.

An image of the pile of dirt-covered clothes in the bathroom of Matthew’s rental flashed in his mind, and Teddy’s bad feeling veered toward horrible certainty.

“Make sure no one else touches the car,” Teddy said. “The police are going to want to take a look at it.”

“Should I call them?”

“Not yet. I’ll tell you when. Thanks, Kyle. Good work.”

When Teddy hung up, it was 6:06 p.m.

Just a few more seconds, and if everything worked the way Kevin said it should, Teddy would soon know the location of the kidnapper’s phone and, hopefully, Rebecca.

When the time clicked over to 6:07 and no alert appeared on his phone, he frowned.

Had Kevin’s tracking hack for the other phone not worked? Or had Teddy been wrong about the phone in the first place, and it wasn’t the device the kidnappers were using to send the videos?

Teddy stared at the screen, waiting for the minute to change from seven to eight. Even if this failed, it was possible Kevin would find something useful in the internetdata. But that could take time, and every moment was precious.

Ten seconds before the clock changed, Teddy’s phone pinged and a text window appeared on his screen:

DEVICE LOCATED

53

Neno shut the phone completely off and tossed it on the table. What he wished he could do was smash it with a hammer, but he still needed it for the final message tomorrow.

He wanted this job done. He wanted to fly back home tonight and never return to America again. He’d already been antsy before, when Kordo had simply gone quiet. Now, with Kordo presumably dead, it felt as if the walls were closing in on him.
