He glanced out the door to the hallway.

He could kill the woman now and get the hell out of there. It wasn’t like they were going to let her go tomorrow. He could take the pictures of her body and send the final email from anywhere.

Only he couldn’t. Not if he valued his own life. Janic had a plan, and he had beenveryclear that no deviations from it would be tolerated.

“She dies the minute the countdown runs out,” Janic had told Neno. “Not a minute before. Not a minute after. I want Novak to suffer like my family suffered. I want him to keep thinking he can save her, that there is something he can do, until it’s too late.”

Janic had then ordered Neno to provide him with a live feed of her execution. No way Neno could fake that. At least, not without the very real chance of his boss realizing the truth. And if that happened, Kordo wouldn’t be the only employee of Janic’s who died on this mission.

“It’s only one more day,” he whispered to himself. Kordo was gone because he was sloppy. But at least he’d died before anyone had gotten to him. “No one knows we’re here. It will be fine. Everything will be fine.”

Pavel looked over his shoulder. “Did you say something?”

“Huh? No.”

With a roll of his eyes, Pavel turned back to the cop show he was watching.

Neno glared at the back of Pavel’s head. “It’s time to prepare her dinner.”

“What does it matter? She’ll be dead tomorrow.”

“She’s not dead yet.”

“It can wait until my show is over.”

“Pavel!”

“If you’re so uptight about it, then you do it.”

Neno’s cheeks grew hot as his anger started to boil. He was about to order Pavel to get off his ass, but then checked himself.

Maybe heshoulddo it. He needed to do something to work off his tension, and hanging around here worrying about every way things could still go wrong would only make things worse.

He warmed a fast-food burger in the microwave, then grabbed a can of soda from the cooler and his mask off the counter, before heading into the hall.

Teddy was halfway to the location that matched the dot glowing on his map, when a new alert flashed on his screen:

SIGNAL LOST

The phone he was tracking had been turned off again. This only further convinced him that it was the one used to send the email. To verify the timing, he shot off a text to Stone.

Did the video arrive?

Stone replied immediately.

Yes. Just a few seconds ago.

Teddy looked at the map again. Though the phone’s signal had been lost, the device’s last-known location was still highlighted.

He eased along an overgrown chain-link fence until he could see the building that matched the spot on the map.

It appeared to be an unused, two-story office building, with a large sign in front proclaiming the property for sale. No cars were parked in the attached lot.

The perfect location for a group of kidnappers to set up shop.

Teddy pulled on his mask and gloves, then he sneaked over to the only door along the rear wall.
