Except the framing was too close and steady to have been taken from a distance. And now that he’d had a good look at Novak’s wife, Janic was sure she was wearing the same clothes she’d had on in the videos Neno sent to her husband.

And then Carl Novak spoke, and Janic felt like his head was going to explode. “Are you all right? Did they hurt you?”

“I’m okay,” Rebecca replied. “Just... tired.”

“I’ve been so worried. I thought I might never see you again.”

He pulled her into another hug.

This video wasn’t from before the kidnapping. Somehow Rebecca had escaped.

Janic’s hand shook with rage as he reached for his phone to call Neno.

When his fingers wrapped around the receiver, something pricked the back of his neck. He tried to jerk his head around to see what it was, but he couldn’t move it.

He couldn’t move anything.

Unhurried footsteps circled from behind him, and a man stepped into view.

“Hello, Mr. Janic,” Teddy Fay said.

???

Teddy waited until the jet was in the air before he called Stone.

“How was the trip?” Stone asked.

“Fast but fruitful.” The prearranged phrase let Stone know that the Novaks no longer needed to worry about Zoran Janic.

“Glad to hear it. Good timing, too. The Novaks asked me to convey their thanks again.”

“You saw them today? They should be lying low.”

“They asked Ben and me to come by this afternoon. The final documents haven’t been signed yet, but I can tell you that the Novaks have chosen Centurion Studios as their production partner.”

“That’s fantastic news.”

“We’ll celebrate when you get back.”

Teddy pushed the button that started the process of changing his seat into a lay-flat bed. “I look forward to it.”

“Oh. And, Teddy?”

“Yes?”

“Peter says he needs Mark back on the set tomorrow morning.”

“I’m sorry, Stone. What was that? There seems to be a connection problem. Can you repeat—”

Teddy hitdisconnect, then turned his phone off and closed his eyes.
