Maitlyn giggles and guides me into the bed. I can’t help but grin when she closes the curtain around us and crawls in with me. My cock twitches as she curls around me, careful not to touch my leg.

We cuddle, and I finally feel like I can breathe.

“I love you, too, Jake McCovey.”

My heart blasts into the stratosphere.

“I knew it!” is whispered from the other side of the curtain. “I told you Vi. It was love.”

Maitlyn and I lift our heads and stare at each other.

A giggle is heard and the shuffle of orthotics crosses on the floor before the door closes.

Shaking my head, I laugh, give my girl a peck, and gaze into her eyes. “God, I love you, too.”

Maitlyn leans over, and we kiss passionately, and everything is finally right in my world. I’m finally feeling fine.

EPILOGUE

MAITLYN

Six MonthsLater

The ring never came. But things between us have only gotten better and better. We’re at a place where I finish his sentences and he finishes mine. I know how he takes his coffee. How warm he likes his shower water— fire hot, imagine that. Where he likes to hide his socks when he’s dead tired and takes them off— in the couch cushions, but it’s adorable. And how much he loves me and adores Kraine.

They went hiking for a weekend at the end of his recovery from the gunshot wound and although I worried about them, they came back best buds… and covered in mud. Head to toe. Thick.

Apparently Kraine went running into a pond and wouldn’t come out. He made Jake come in and then when Jake was carrying him out, they both fell into the muddy bank.

I hosed them off out back.

And now it’s spring and the winter snow is thawing all around us. I thought that maybe Jake might propose at Christmas, then New Years, and then Valentine’s Day. But they all came and went the same— no ring.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little or a lot disappointed.

I want this man to be mine forever.

So I’m taking matters into my own hands.

I look at the box. It’s not fancy, but it’s Jake. It’s a gold band. Simple. Classic.

He’s at home for the next two weeks and then he’ll be heading out to train up for the season. I know I’ll miss him fiercely, but I also know that what he does is vital to Black Timber Peak Mountain. The mountain is part of his soul. It’s like he lives and breathes for what he does.

I found a job working books for the local businesses. They were more than happy to find someone who could do their accounting and I even have a tiny little shop set up on main street. It’s all decorated in pinks and the Teagarden sisters stop by every once in a while for coffee. I’ve started to like our little gossip time. That’s how I know that Becca and Nolan have some news that they’re not ready to share— Black Timber Peak’s going to have a new addition this year.

They’re not the only ones.

The door opens and Kraine bounds in, doing a walking shake, sending hair flying everywhere. Shedding is happening and I can’t seem to keep this two-bedroom cabin clean enough.

I pat my pocket. It’s time for this, and not time to get the vacuum out for the second time today.

“Honey, can we talk for a minute?”

Jake steps out of his boots. He’s finishing up a deck build with Pierce this weekend. “Sure. What’s up?”

I sit on the sectional. “Come here. I need you close to me.”

His brow furrows just slightly. “Everything okay?”
