Amon didn’t have time for this. “Take it up with Rayne and Eleazar.”

He turned and cursed when he saw Slater was gone. Amon moved swiftly to the street, but the guy was nowhere in sight. Just for that, Amon wanted to rip out Ethan’s throat. Wolf shifters were idiots, and Ethan had the worst timing ever.

The scent was completely gone, which told Amon that Slater had gotten into a car and driven away.

“Lose your prey?” Ethan smirked as he exited the alley. “Too bad.”

Amon threw Ethan against the building, curling his fingers around the bastard’s throat. “I’m not stalking that particular human because I want to drain him. He’s harassing one of our humans, and I intend to put a stop to it.”

Ethan looked as if he wasn’t sure if Amon was telling the truth or blowing smoke up his ass.

“Get in my way again and I’ll feed you your own fucking tail.” Amon once again shoved Ethan aside, cursing as he made his way back to his car.

“Why on earth are you calling me?” Eleazar said as soon as he answered the phone. “I do not have time for doggy tricks.”

“One of my men was assaulted by one of your coven members,” Rayne growled. “Ethan is new and didn’t know Amon was a member of your inner circle.”

“Then you better train your pups better,” Eleazar said, unamused that he had to have this conversation in the first place, though he had no idea what Rayne was talking about. “Keep a leash on your mongrels and my men will not have to.”

Eleazar looked up and saw Amon lingering in his doorway.

“This conversation is over.” Eleazar hung up. “Come in, Amon. Would you mind telling me why I have Rayne biting at my ankles?”

Amon told him about the incident in the alley.

“Who is Slater?” Eleazar asked.

He sat there and listened to Amon tell him about everything, the harassment, the suspicion that there was a hate group out there targeting humans who worked for vampires, and how he’d hired Stone to watch over Sonny during daylight hours when Sonny needed to go out.

The more he listened, the angrier Eleazar became. Sonny held a special place in his heart, and to learn that he was being targeted made Eleazar’s blood boil.

“Why was this not brought to my attention sooner?” With Andrew’s pregnancy, Eleazar had been preoccupied with his mate, not paying attention to his coven as much as he should have been. For fuck’s sake, they were men old enough to know better, and Eleazar shouldn’t have to keep a constant eye on them.

“I’m handling it,” Amon defended. “I would have killed Slater tonight if that mutt hadn’t intervened.”

“No.” Eleazar sat back and steepled his fingers. “I want you to follow Slater but do not kill him. We need to know if a radical group has formed and what they are up to.”

Eleazar had tasked Amon with keeping Sonny safe while the human performed his duties, but you would have to be blind not to see something more was going on. Amon was enamored with Sonny, and a vampire was an even deadlier creature when someone they cared about was in danger.

That was because vampires lived a very, very long time, and after a while, their emotions dimmed until they were numb, uncaring about most things. When they did care, it was with passion and ferocity, and they would move heaven and earth to protect their loved ones.

“Understood,” Amon said.

“And, Amon,” Eleazar added, “do not let your emotions cloud your judgment. You are first and foremost a member of my coven, and your responsibility is to protect all of us. Sonny included. Slater is a police officer, and to kill him might bring unwanted attention to our coven. We must tread carefully.”

Amon nodded. “I don’t like it, but I’ll abide by your wishes.”

Somehow Eleazar knew it would be an inner battle for Amon not to end Slater’s life, but until they knew what Slater was up to, and if he’d formed a radical group, Eleazar wanted him untouched.

He knew Stone, and the wolf shifter, though not fond of vampires, would protect Sonny, because Sonny was human and it was in the wolves’ DNA to throw themselves into harm’s way to protect them.

Eleazar didn’t want to see innocent humans die, but Slater wasn’t innocent. Sonny was. If it came down to it, Eleazar himself would end Slater’s life for threatening one of theirs.

Sonny was polishing the glass and chrome toward Eleazar’s office when he felt a presence. When he looked around, he didn’t see anyone, except Isaak, who was sitting in a chair, looking completely bored.
