Since Isaak wasn’t reacting to anything, Sonny shrugged and went back to work, only the feeling of someone near him didn’t go away. He looked around again then screamed and jumped when he saw Amon standing right behind him.

“Don’t do that!” Sonny swung his dust cloth at the vampire. “You just scared a decade off my life!”

To his dismay, Isaak was now smiling, a small chuckle escaping him.

Sonny narrowed his eyes. “You saw him and didn’t warn me.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Isaak said as he stood. He smirked at Sonny before he walked away. Damn vampires and their games. Ugh. Now Sonny’s heart was beating so fast he thought he’d never get it to slow down.

“I’m sorry I frightened you.” But Amon didn’t look sorry. There was too much amusement in his brown eyes.

“You would have been sorry if I’d keeled over with a heart attack.” Sonny pressed a hand to his chest. “I’m not feeling so hot. I really think you did something.”

Worry filled Amon’s eyes. “Do I need to call an ambulance?”

Sonny burst out laughing. “Now we’re even.”

“That wasn’t funny,” Amon snarled.

“That was totally funny,” Sonny countered. “Next time you’ll think twice about sneaking up on me.” He looked around to make sure they were alone. “Tell me Slater is still breathing.”

“Only because of a mishap.” Amon told him what happened.

Sonny poked Amon in the chest with his finger. “I asked you not to kill him.”

“And he didn’t listen to my warning.” Amon grabbed Sonny’s finger and held it, and damn, but Sonny didn’t want to pull away. He was finding it harder and harder to resist Amon, even though the thought of opening himself up to someone else terrified him.

“Who’s Ethan?”

With a sigh, Amon told him about the newest hunter. Sonny hated the idea that any hunter had gotten that close to Amon. If Ethan had chosen to run a knife through Amon’s heart from behind instead of shoving him into a wall… Sonny shuddered. “Did you kick his ass?”

Amon smirked. “I don’t think he’ll try his hand with me anytime soon.”

“Good.” Sonny stood there, unsure of what else to say.

Amon grabbed the glass cleaner and cloth from Sonny’s hands and set them aside. “Why don’t you take a break?”

“I guess I could take one since I’m still having my fake heart attack.” And Sonny liked how Amon held his hand as he led the way. They ended up in Sonny’s bedroom, and to distract himself, Sonny went to the mini fridge in his room.

It was convenient since he got snackish late at night, and it wasn’t always wise to make a kitchen run with vampires lurking about. He grabbed his salad, a deliciousness with tiny fruit sprinkled throughout. The raspberry vinaigrette would make it even tastier.

Then he noticed Amon scowling. “What?”

“That’s food for rabbits.”

“Well, this bunny is hungry.” Sonny sat in the chair in front of his flat-screen television and popped the lid on the plastic container.

“That’s right.” Amon sat next to him on the other chair. “Sonny Bunny.”

“Don’t you dare.” Sonny pointed his fork at Amon. “Only my niece and nephew can call me that.”

“I just don’t understand how leaves are delicious.” Amon tried to reach into Sonny’s salad, as if to pick at one of the spinach leaves, but Sonny whacked his hand with his fork. Amon snatched his hand back.

“You do not touch other people’s food,” Sonny said. “Men have been killed doing that. If you try again, I’ll remove your hand.”

“Over saturated leaves?” Amon looked genuinely confused. “You put oil on leaves and are mad that I tried to touch it?”

“Exactly.” He took a bite, moaning, then turned and chewed in Amon’s face. “So tasty.”
