Despite those dark shadows that linger in his eyes, and the fact that the words that he said to me right in this very room not so long ago are completely true, he isn’t the man who gave his life to protect me, who planned his future with me.

As much as it hurts to think it, JD is just the man that was here. He was the man who made this whole fucked-up situation better. He’s the man who showed me pleasure instead of pain and makes me laugh instead of cry—mostly.

He isn’t the man that changed his entire life to make mine better. He just… made a bad situation bearable.

“You okay?” Mav asks when a pained sigh falls from my lips. “Here, this should cheer you up,” he says, sliding a glass toward me.

My eyes light up at the sight.

“Oh my God, is that a raspberry margarita?” I ask, hope blossoming within me.

He smirks at me, and it makes my stomach flip excitedly. “Almost. Reid’s missing a couple of things.”

Eagerly, I reach out and slide it closer before taking a sip.

“Oh my God.” I moan when the fruitiness hits my tongue, mixing with the salt of the rim of the glass and the strong alcohol. “This is going to go straight to my head,” I confess, after just one sip.

It’s been a while since anything but beer passed my lips. This is going to take me down fast.

“We’d better get the party started then. Any idea how to play some music in this place?”

I shake my head before kicking the smart speaker into action like I’ve heard JD do a couple of times.

“Really?” he asks when the song starts playing.

“Really,” I confirm, lifting my drink to my lips for another sip. “So good.” I moan.

My skin burns with his attention, my cheeks heating when I realize he’s staring right at my lips.

Pulling the glass away, I make a show of licking the salt away.

“You good?” I ask, my voice rough and sexy.

“H-huh, yeah.” He grunts, his hand shifting beneath the counter giving away what’s going on beneath.

“Come here,” I demand, spinning around on the stool and opening my legs for him to step between, while the music fills our ears and the scent of our pizzas cooking floods the air.

He takes my face in his hands and dips down low. “I knew that once I started, I’d never stop,” he confesses.

“Who’s asking you to?” I groan, wrapping my legs around his body and dragging him closer.

And that’s exactly how JD finds us a few minutes later.

I’m not sure if it’s the promise of the meal he attempted or if he’s just calmed himself down from his freak out, but I can’t deny that a rush of excitement shoots through my veins at having them both with me again.

“Is this a private party or can anyone join?”

Mav groans into my neck at the interruption.

“Well, not just anyone,” I half say, half moan when Mav sucks on the skin beneath my ear, marking his territory. “But we might make an exception for you. Hungry?” I ask, risking a look over Mav’s shoulder.

My breath catches at the darkness I find in JD’s eyes.

There is so much more to this playful man than meets the eye. And despite my earlier thoughts, I can’t help but want to dig all his secrets out to discover what makes him really tick.

There’s just something about him, something that calls to me.

My lips part to say something, but the buzzer goes off on the oven, calling time on our little make-out session.
