“Can we eat them outside?” I ask.

Yeah, the sun has gone down, and I’ve no doubt it’ll be cold, but the thought of the fresh air rushing over my skin is too much to ignore.

“Reid has heaters,” JD says. “They’re—”

“I’ll find them,” Mav states, pulling the pizzas from the oven and leaving them on the side for me to deal with. Turning to me, his eyes track down my body before he marches over and whispers, “You good?” in my ear, making a shudder run down my spine. His hand grips my waist, squeezing possessively, and I burn even hotter.

“Yeah. We’ll be right out.”

After dropping a kiss on my temple, he takes my drink along with two bottles of beer for them and heads out.

No words are said as Mav’s footsteps float away but that doesn’t stop JD from focusing on where he disappeared.

“Julian?” I whisper, lowering myself to my feet and walking over.

He keeps his eyes locked on the open door, but I don’t miss the way his chest deflates.

His muscles jump when I press my hand against his abs and his breath catches.

“Hey,” I whisper. “You okay?”

He lowers his head, his eyes closing as he takes a moment to figure out how to answer that question. I’ve no idea what he tells himself, but when he opens them again and looks at me, the darkness has all but disappeared and the Julian I know is back.

His electric blue eyes sparkle with life and excitement and his lips pull into his signature smirk.

“Of course,” he lies, his smile widening. “Just had to shower all that crap off me. Told you, Dove. I can’t cook for shit.”

My eyes bounce between his, searching for the darkness, desperate to grab hold of it and force him to talk about it, but it’s gone, swallowed whole by vibrant blue that’s full of life and excitement.

“Dove?” he questions, his brows pulling together when I don’t say anything.

“Whatever it is, you can tell me,” I whisper, reaching for his hand and twisting our fingers together.

He steps closer, the tension between us charged before he reaches for me, dragging his thumb across my bottom lip.

“Can’t stop thinking about these,” he murmurs. “Kissing me, sucking me—”

“JD,” I warn. “That wasn’t what I meant.”

“Nothing else to talk about, little dove.”

He releases me so fast, it gives me whiplash before turning around and gazing at the pizzas almost as longingly as he was me.

“These look amazing. Grab some plates. Let’s go eat.”

“Should…” I pause, and he glances back from finding the pizza cutter in a drawer. “Should we save some for Reid?”

His eyes twinkle and his smirk grows.

“He’s a big boy, he can look after himself. But he’ll love to know that you’re thinking of his well-being.”

“I’m not,” I argue. “I was just thinking that it’s his food.”

“Sure you were. Come on,” he says, somehow managing to balance all the trays in his hands.

I follow him out with a deep frown marring my brow and concern swirling in my stomach.

I shouldn’t care what’s going on with him. Mav and I are only staying here for one reason: to get our revenge and then embark on the rest of our lives.
