“What are you doing?”

His smile grows, his eyes flashing with excitement.

“Proving you wrong.”

In a split second, I’m in his arms and he’s running across the deck toward the—

“No, JD. NO,” I scream, as he closes in on the pool.

All I get in response is his deep chuckle.

“JD,” I scream. “J—” But it’s too late. He dives right off the side with me in his arms.

MAVERICK

“Your contact is Malakai Saint?” Reid snaps, his face hardening.

We might have talked at length last night about everything that he’s been planning, but we never got around to how I could help with my own contacts. Although now we have, I’m regretting even mentioning it.

I should have known that I’d never impress the mighty Reid Harris with anything I’ve done in my life.

I could take Victor down single-handedly and he still wouldn't be impressed, or even grateful. Asshole.

“Yeah, and? He’s about as close to Sidney Hyde as you’re going to get. What more do you want?”

“His right-hand man would have been nice.”

“Yeah, well. It would be nice if Santa Claus was real too, but we can’t all get what we fucking want, can we?”

“All right, chill your fucking tits. I was just saying that Malakai wasn’t who I was hoping for.”

“He’s Sidney’s stepson. I’d say it’s pretty fucking good.”

“Yeah,” he agrees, although it’s forced as fuck. “It’s great. I’m so glad you’re here.”

I raise a brow. “Sincere, thanks.”

“What the fuck do you want?”

“Nothing. So do you want me to call him or what?”

He sits back in what can only be described as his throne and gestures for me to go ahead.

I shake my head, wondering what the hell Alana has seen in him in her time here that puts that look in her eyes when she watches him.

As much as I hate it, it’s there every time they’re in the same room.

They’re an unexploded grenade waiting to go off.

Sliding my cell from my pocket, I find the number I have stored under a fake name and hit call, all the while being under the intense stare of the man on the other side of the desk.

It rings and rings and rings, and eventually cuts off without the option of leaving a message.

Reid’s eyes never leave me, and despite the fact he could clearly hear my attempt at reaching out has been unsuccessful, I murmur, “No answer.”

His brow lifts as if to say, ‘No shit, asshole,’ before I lower my cell.
