JD laughs. “You fucked up. Of course I’m going to keep mentioning it.”
“Asshole.” Reid hisses.
“She’s going to be okay though, yeah?” The concern in JD’s voice is evident, and it makes my heart rate increase.
He cares.
I know in the grand scheme of things, I don’t matter, not really. His concern for my well-being doesn’t change anything.
Even being in a room without a locked door doesn’t mean anything.I have no power here. No control. I’m nothing but their puppet.
Doc was right.
I could try running, but I wouldn’t get very far.
“How many times?” Reid sighs. “Doc says after a few days’ rest, she’ll be good as new.”
“Thank fuck.”
“Her pussy can’t be that good,” Reid mutters under his breath.
JD doesn’t say anything for a few seconds, but I swear I can hear the smirk on his face.
“That’s for me to know, bro. And for you to sulk over.”
“I’m not sulking.” He scoffs.
“Oh, you so fucking are. Admit it, dude. You lost.”
His words make my brows knit together and the flicker of happiness I felt earlier having them here ebbs away.
“You lost.”
What game were they playing?
The answer is obvious.
Me. I’m the game.
The pawn.
A pained, disappointed sigh slips from my lips. There’s a beat of silence where I pray they haven’t heard me. But I know they have. The air is charged, crackling around us like a live current. And then the bed shifts and JD’s stare makes the side of my face burn red hot.
“Dove?” he whispers, his hand finding mine on top of the sheet, where I was searching for him not so long ago.
Warmth surges up my arm, making me yearn for more of his touch.
But then I remember his words.
“You lost.”
I tug my hand free. Or at least, I try to. JD’s grip is too firm.
“Dove?” he repeats firmly. “Open your eyes, baby.”
I don’t want to. I want to defy him. But my ingrained need to do as I’m told, to be a good and compliant little girl means my body takes on a life of its own and my eyes pop open.
The second our gazes connect, the most incredible smile spreads across JD’s face, his eyes lighting up with relief.
