“You’re okay,” he breathes, almost as if he’s reassuring himself more than anything.

I search his face, hunting for the truth of what I just overheard. But all I find is concern.

I’ve no idea how long I’ve been out of it, but JD’s eyes are ringed with dark circles, as if he hasn’t slept in days.

Tearing my eyes from his, I glance at Reid. He doesn’t look much better.

“What’s wrong?”

I glance down at myself, assuming that I’ll be covered in blood like the two of them.

Did I slice myself on something as I went down? Bang my head so hard I split it open?

But there is nothing. Just a blank Hawks tank.

I tug my arm again, this time able to slip my fingers free of JD’s grip.

“Get out,” I whisper, although from the way JD startles, you’d think I screamed it.

“W-what?” he breathes, staring at me as if I’ve suddenly sprouted an extra head.

Holding his eyes firm, I let those two words he said not so long ago repeat over and over in my mind.

My heart races and I’ve no choice but to grip the sheets tightly in my fists as I force out the words he so clearly doesn’t want to hear.

“I don’t want you here. I want you to leave.”

“Dove, you’re sick. You need—”

“Go.”

“But we brought you—”

“Leave.”

Thankfully, Reid is a little less shocked and surprisingly not as stubborn as his best friend because he pushes from the chair. He wraps his hand around JD’s upper arm and none too gently drags him from his seat on the edge of the bed.

“No, we can’t. She needs—”

“Space.” Reid growls. His understanding of the situation and his willingness to give me what I need make my forehead wrinkle.

“She’s going to kill you for this, you do know that, right?”

I stare at both of them as I focus on those words, trying to drag up a memory of how I got here.

My vision blurs as I fight with my subconscious, but it’s not until JD calls for me when Reid has him almost out the door that something slams into me.

“Come for me, Dove. I want you squeezing down on my fingers while you stare into his eyes. Show him exactly what he’s missing.”

Suddenly, I’m in the hallway. My back pressed against the solid, cold wall that led down to the basement I’ve called home for the past… I don’t know how long. The heat of JD’s huge, hard body burns mine as his fingers work inside me. But while he might be the one bringing me to ruin, my eyes aren’t locked on his electric blue ones, but a dark even more dangerous pair just a few feet away.

Looking up, my gaze collides with JD’s dark ones. The despair and concern that stares back at me wraps around my chest like a band forcing all the air rushes from my lungs.

“Alana, please,” he begs. His voice is so quiet, I wonder if he actually said it or if I imagined it. My subconscious’s way of stopping me from following through with sending him away and ending up alone again. Locked up in a room that isn’t mine, with even more questions swirling around in my head.

But I don’t respond. I can’t. The lump of emotion is so thick in my throat I can barely breathe, let alone speak.

I’m so confused. So lost.
