Like the predictable male that he is, his eyes drop.

“You might be weak enough to be bought by a sloppy blow job, but your brother isn’t.”

“So how’d you do it then?” he asks.

“He invited me to join him and JD for dinner one night. Haven’t been back down since.”

Devin considers this for a moment before nodding as if he actually understands.

“Where are they?”

He smirks before dragging his thumb along his bottom lip.

Devin is hot, don’t get me wrong. But his pretty boy image doesn’t do it for me like it does most other women in Harrow Creek. I like my men to be a little rougher with harder lines and fiercer eyes.

“And here I was thinking you had them wrapped around your little finger, Rapunzel.”

“Can you stop calling me that? Rapunzel was locked up in a tower, not a basement. Maybe you should pick up a book or two every now and then,” I say, gesturing to those surrounding us.

“Nah, I’m more of a ‘get out there and experience the world’ kind of guy.”

“Long-winded way of saying you can’t read, but whatever,” I taunt.

His eyes narrow dangerously, but I don’t show an ounce of fear.

If I can survive Reid Harris and his torture chamber, then Devin’s anger will be a walk in the park.

“I’m a student at MKU, if you weren’t aware.”

Pressing my palms to the desk, I stand, holding his eyes as I tower over him.

“I wonder how much Daddy had to pay to make that happen. Between you and Ez, it must have cost him a small fortune.”

Devin scoffs.

“Oh, come off it. We all know Ellis is the only one that should be gracing the campus of Maddison Kings U.”

Devin’s lips press into a thin line.

“Are you always this much of a bitch?” he asks. “No wonder Kane couldn’t stand spending time with you.”

I stumble back, hating that I show any kind of weakness. But damn it. His words fucking hurt.

I knew Kane was a job. That the only reason he was spending time with me was because Victor told him he had to. But being with him was the closest I got to spending time with a friend than I have in a very long time—Mav aside. I actually looked forward to our nights together.

Yes, it was all an act. The person I was when we were together was a fake. Designed to lure him in and do my job. But still. Out of all the men, he didn’t look at me like I was nothing. And we had a laugh. Or at least, I did.

Seems I might have been the only one who got anything good out of our time together.

“Oh, did that hurt, Rapunzel? You didn’t actually think he liked you, did you?”

I shake my head hating that my eyes burn with tears.

“Aw, you did.”

“There’s only one man I want, Devin. And I can assure you, that isn’t Kane Legend. He’s all Letty’s.”

His lips pull into the briefest of scowls at the mention of Letty, but he quickly recovers.
