“What about me? I’m your family, Dyllan. Is it because we don’t have kids? I’ll give you kids. I’m not just saying that to make you stay; it’s because I want a life with you, my Grumpy Bear. I want kids, the messy house, the school pick ups, the town events. I want it all. I want it all with you!” Skylar couldn’t help her voice getting louder as all the emotions poured out of her.

He pulled her over to his side of the truck and held her in his arms as she cried. “Hey, I don’t have any plans and I haven’t applied for anything, I promise.”

“Really?” She sniffed as she looked up at him with her red rimmed eyes.

“Yes. Now, how about we leave this topic for right now and enjoy our time in Vancouver?”

Skylar nodded as she climbed back onto her side. Following Skylar’s gaze to the house, he noticed swinging curtains, letting him know they’d been caught.

“That wasn’t the first impression I wanted to make.” She pulled down the visor and opened the mirror, wiping at her eyes.

“They’re going to love you. Plus, I’m sure to them, me making a woman cry wouldn’t be that much of a stretch,” he said with a chuckle.

Skylar chuckled. “You are a bit of a jerk.”

“But I’m your jerk, babydoll,” he said with a wink as he jumped out of the truck.

“Uncle Dyllan!” Thomas yelled as he ran down the stairs and leapt into Dyllan’s arms. “Hey, buddy. How are you?”

“Good!” the five-year-old replied. “I’ve been a good helper for Mommy, just like you said.”

“That’s great, bud!”

“Hey, Dyllan,” Deanna said as she leaned on the doorframe. Her brown hair was pulled into a bun on top of her head and she wore her signature yoga pants and t-shirt, the look she’d deemed ‘the mom look.’ She crossed her arms over her chest, but she had a smirk on her face. “Took you long enough to get up here.”

Dyllan laughed, “Oh, you know me, causing trouble everywhere I go.” Dyllan turned toward the truck to see Skylar walking toward him. Her gaze softened as she looked at the little boy in his arms. “Deanna, I’d like you to meet my wife, Skylar.”

“Wife?” Deanna exclaimed. She looked between the two of them. “Thomas, can you run inside, please?”

Dyllan put the boy down, watching as he ran up the stairs and past his mom’s legs squealing.

Skylar moved to stand beside Dyllan, letting him grab her hand.

Deanna closed the door except for a small gap. “Explain, please. Last time I saw you, you’d sworn up and down that marriage was never in the cards for you. Even going so far as teaching Maddox a swear word or two that took me a week to wipe from his vocabulary.”

Skylar looked up at him with a raised eyebrow raised.

“You know why I felt that way,” he said to Skylar before turning to Deanna. “We didn’t exactly intend on it happening.” He told her about Vegas and how they ended up married, leaving her laughing so hard she was crying.

“Look at that; you do have a habit of making women cry,” Skylar joked quietly.

“Stop it, wife,” Dyllan whispered.

“Never, husband.” She grinned cheekily up at him.

“This is perfect. Not only did you drunkenly get married but also to someone that isn’t afraid to stand up to you. If only Jax were here to see this,” she said as she continued to laugh while wiping her eyes.

The mention of her husband darkened his mood. Jax would’ve gotten a kick out of it, but he also knew all the reasons why Dyllan had sworn off marriage. While he hadn’t agreed with them, Jax always respected his decision.

“Come on in; Maddox is excited to see you too.” Deanna waved them in as she made her way inside the house.

Dyllan made sure to avoid the pictures that hung on the wall, all of them too much of a reminder of what Deanna and the kids had lost, what Jax was missing out on. Photos of the kids as babies, Jax holding them or playing with them in the yard. All reminders of a life none of them would ever have again.

“Can I get you coffee or anything?” Deanna asked as she strolled down the hallway to the kitchen.

“Oh, yes, please,” Skylar said as she perked up. “We had to leave crazy early this morning, and this one wouldn’t stop anywhere for coffee on the way.” She nodded her head toward him as she rolled her eyes.

“Dyllan!” Deanna gasped as she turned with a mug in her hand. “You deprived your wife of coffee? That has to go against the wedding vows, doesn’t it?”
