“Nothing,” he grumbled, staring out the windshield. Clouds filled the sky, getting darker the closer they got to Logan Creek.

Fitting for how this trip is turning out.

“Nuh-uh. No way. I’m not buying that. Try again.” Her voice became sterner the more she dug in her heels.

“Fine, you want to know, I’m thinking about that job offer in Iraq,” he spit out.

Skylar fumed beside him, face a glaring red. “I see.”

“Maybe the time is right, huh? I go off to Iraq for a few months, maybe longer. You can go to Vancouver and plan weddings. Seems like a win/win to me.” Even as the words were coming out of his mouth, he didn’t believe them. Vitriol fuelled his anger the more he stewed.

“And what about what I want? Doesn’t that matter?” Her voice increased.

“Like you’d be happy in Logan Creek with me. You’re a city girl through and through. You wouldn’t know what to do in a small town with no malls.”

“Now you’re just trying to be cruel. I’ve done nothing to support the stereotype since coming here. Heck, we just went to get all my things from the city to move in with you, which you insisted on. Don’t you remember that, husband? You’re the one who insisted we stay in the marriage. You’re the one that refused annulment or divorce. So what gives?” she yelled, waving her hands around as she spoke.

Dyllan grunted.

“No, you can’t Henry Cavill your way out of this one. Use your words, Grumpy Bear.”

Dyllan shot a glare at her from the side before paying attention to the road. If they were going to have this fight while he was driving, it wasn’t going to end with them in a ditch because she distracted him.

“You want to know what happened? Life happened. Reality happened. I still mean what I said in Vegas, divorce isn’t an option. This is the best option,” he hissed.

“Bullshit!” Skylar spat from the other side of the truck, throwing her hands in the air. “Aarg, now you made me swear. You drive me insane.”

Shocked, Dyllan didn’t know what to say as he registered that Skylar swore. Instead, he sat quietly.

“You’re the most bull-headed, arrogant jerk ever, do you know that?” she continued. “Just assuming you know what’s best for me. You know what, Dyllan Thompson, you don’t know anything!”

“I don’t, huh? I don’t know how much your face lit up when your friend offered you that job? Or about the hesitation you had in declining it?”

“So, because I was shocked that I ran into an old friend, and she offered me a job, that means I don’t want to spend my life with you? That’s the most far-fetched idea I’ve heard in a while.” She shook her head as she looked out the windshield.

“Doesn’t make it any less true.”

“I think you’re scared.”

Dyllan scoffed. “Scared of what?”

“I think you’re scared of a lot of things. Scared of turning into your parents. Scared of having a safe job while people like Jax are out there doing something dangerous, even if it’s not what you want for yourself. Most of all, I think you’re scared of letting yourself be happy.”

“That is the most fucked up shit I’ve ever heard.” Dyllan scoffed at her accusation, only because he didn’t want to admit how close to home she hit.

Was he afraid of turning into his parents? Abso-fucking-loutely he was. That was the last thing he wanted for himself. He did feel guilt and a little shame over having a safe job when Jax was out there risking his life but that last one. That was too much.

“I don’t think it is. You admitted to me the morning we woke up married that I scare you for reasons I still don’t understand. Did we get married under ideal circumstances? No, but I think that we’ve tried freaking hard to make it work based on what life has thrown at us and you just want to walk away from it all?” Her cheeks were red, and her breathing halted as she yelled her words.

“I’m not walking away from anything!”

“It sure feels like it! You’re shipping me off to Vancouver, and you want to head to Iraq. That sounds like walking away to me!”

Dyllan seethed as he stared at the road in front of him. The skies opened up and hail poured down as he pulled into their driveway and turned off the truck. “It’s for the best, Skylar. One day you’ll see that.”

“All I see is a scared man who won’t admit he’s wrong.” Her voice was low as she turned to face the windshield, no longer looking at him. Her eyes were close to tears as she rested back against the door in defeat.

It pained him to see her like that, but he knew it was for the best. She deserved better than him, better than the life he could give her. She just needed to see it his way. “You should call your friend and accept the job.”
