Taking a bite of her burger, she couldn’t help the moan that came out as she bit into the mushroom-cheesy-goodness. “Oh my gosh, I forgot just how good this burger is.”

“You’re doing it again,” he growled as he narrowed his eyes at her.

“Doing what?” She asked, wiping her mouth with a napkin.

“Making that noise.”

“What noise?” She wracked her brain, trying to figure out what she’d done.

“That moan. I told you. No one but me gets to hear that, and only in the bedroom.” The flame was back in his eyes as he leaned closer to her.

I should’ve figured this was how to snap him out of his mood.

“And if I wanted to make it in the kitchen? Or the living room?” She teased, raising an eyebrow. “Maybe even back in the hotel room?”

“You’re asking for it, wife,” he said in a low, husky tone.

“Maybe I want it, husband,” she replied back as she leaned closer to him.

“Can I get you anything else?” the waitress asked as she rushed to their table.

“The cheque, please,” Dyllan said, not taking his eyes off her.

Skylar had a feeling she was on the dessert menu.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Dyllan

It hadn’t taken long to fill Dyllan’s truck with the boxes from Skylar’s storage unit and get back on the road. This time he’d made sure he left enough time to get Skylar coffee and breakfast before they left the city. He might not have been married that long, but he was catching on to some things quickly. Like how she was grumpy in the morning until she’d had her coffee, how she closed her eyes and smiled as she sang along with the radio, or his personal favourite was how she tried to find the little things around her to make her smile. He’d never in his life noticed a robin unless it was getting too close to him, but she did, and he loved that about her.

The sun shone through the truck’s windshield, highlighting her beautiful face as she tilted it up to meet the warm rays. She had a smile on her face as she soaked it up, humming along to Dean Brody’s ‘Love Would Be Enough.’

“You’re staring at me,” she said, without opening her eyes.

“I can’t help it; you’re beautiful.” His voice was soft as he split his attention between her and the road.

Slowly opening her eyes, she turned her head to look at him, a smile still on her face. “Thank you. You’re pretty handsome yourself there, Grumpy Bear.”

“Haven’t I earned the right to drop that nickname now?” He’d been trying his best not to be overly grumpy with her. As much as he could be anyway.

“Nope,” she said, emphasizing the ‘p’ as she turned her head back and closed her eyes once more.

Dragging his attention back to the road, his mind drifted to the night before. He should’ve figured she’d be sought after for another job in the city. Based on what she did for Kade and Brody’s wedding alone, he could see that she was amazing at what she did, and that was something she pulled off in a small town all by herself. He couldn’t even begin to imagine what she could do if she’d had the resources a big city like Vancouver could bring her.

He wouldn’t fault her for wanting to take the job opportunity. What could he offer her in Logan Creek? The life of the mayor’s wife? Not that it was all that glamorous in a small town and he suspected she wouldn’t be happy just sitting around waiting for the next photo op or charity event to attend.

His mind drifted to the job offer that still sat on his desk in his office. As much as he thought he wasn’t interested, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. He’d worried about Skylar and the life they were starting, but he didn’t know if he’d be enough for her. She deserved the best, and he just couldn’t give that to her.

“There you go, getting all grumpy again,” Skylar said.

“No, I’m not. I didn’t even say anything.”

“You didn’t have to say it. I can feel your grumpiness all the way over here.” She turned and rested her back against the door beside her, arms crossed over her chest.

“Look, we’re close to home; can it wait?” he spat out. This was not a conversation he wanted to have while on the road.

“No, I don’t think it can because then you’ll huff off and get all grumpy on me again. So, spill it, what’s wrong?”
