“Let’s go home,” he says, holding the car door for me.

CHAPTER27

Riley

“He’s texting me,” I tell Kyle as we come to the door of my condo.

Dean:Are you still with him?

“Tell him no. I went back to the office,” Kyle orders.

I grit my teeth, not liking taking orders from anyone, but I reply with that message to Dean.

A beat later my phone starts ringing.

“Speaker,” Kyle says before I answer.

I put Dean on speaker.

“You fucking married him!” he cries out before I can even say anything.

“Yes.” I meet Kyle’s gaze.

His expression remains neutral. I hold my breath, wondering if Dean is going to buy it.

“That’s fucking brilliant! I knew he would fall for your lies.”

Kyle’s glare hardens but he remains silent.

“How did you do it?” He sounds a lot more excited than he should if he knew the truth.

“Do what?”

“Get him to fall for you? Hell, at first, I was skeptical, but then I saw the way he looked at you. It’s real. That dummy actually is in love with you.”

Kyle’s hazel eyes meet mine. A deep shudder moves through my chest from the way his gaze remains locked on me. I swear there’s a slight softening in his expression. The way he’s looking at me now makes me wonder if there’s some validity to Dean’s words.

“Don’t call him that,” is all I manage to tell Dean.

He remains silent for a second. “Did you fall for him, too?” he asks, sounding appalled at the idea.

Kyle’s eyes burrow into mine. The ‘no’ is on the tip of my tongue but it feels heavy. Slowly, I answer, “What’s it to you?”

“Because that motherfucker is going down. The fact that he married you is perfect. Gosh.” He pauses. “I never would’ve expected him to actually fall in love with you. Fuck you? Yeah.”

“Excuse you?”

He huffs. “Don’t get all offended. You’re a con artist, sweetie. I know you’ll use what’s between your legs to get whatever you want. Hey. It worked on Brendan.”

“For the life of me,” I murmur. “I never slept with that spoiled brat!” I’m getting real tired of people insinuating it. “Anyway, you got what you wanted. I have to go.”

“Wait,” he insists. “I almost forgot. The thumb drive was a jackpot, too. The stupid idiot put all of the information right there on his work drive.” He giggles—actually giggles—like a schoolboy. “I knew he was dumb as shit. There are addresses, and I bet those are the abandoned houses his family owns. It looks like there’s evidence of payouts to politicians, too. Fuck! This is a goldmine.”

He sounds giddy. “Gotcha motherfucker.”

Kyle grabs my wrist. ‘Hang up the phone,’ he mouths.

“I need to go. Kyle will be back soon.”
