Dean hesitates but then shakes it.

Kyle’s hand visibly tightens on Dean’s.

“Sorry about earlier,” Kyle says. “I thought some random asshole was hitting on my wife.”

Dean coughs.

Kyle still hasn’t let his hand go. Dean’s face starts turning an interesting shade of red.

“You know how some jerks can be. They don’t know how to take ‘no’ for an answer when it comes to a beautiful woman.” Kyle looks me right in the eye.

For a second I swear that compliment is genuine. The stupid flutters in my belly make me want to believe he means it.

“I can’t leave her alone for too long before the dogs come sniffing around. Isn’t that right, babe?”

“Right.” I meet his smile with one of my own and wrap my hands around his arm. “But I keep telling my husband I can take care of myself.”

“As long as you’re married to me, you won’t have to,” Kyle quickly replies.

Another round of butterflies in my belly.

Dean manages to yank his hand free from Kyle’s hold.

“Shit, sorry about that. I get lost looking into her eyes.”

Damn. He’s good.

“Is your hand okay?” Kyle questions.

Dean shakes his hand a little. “Y-Yeah, fine. It’s good to see you again, Kyle. I, uh, I’m glad to hear there’re no hard feelings.”

Kyle drapes an arm over my shoulder.

“None at all. I was sorry to hear about your father.” Kyle stares Dean directly in the eyes.

The way Dean flinches tells me how much of a gut punch that remark is.

“Everything happened the way it should’ve,” Kyle continues. “Well, I have to get the missus home. Take care.”

Kyle takes my hand as we head out of the hallway, making our way past the few co-workers from Townsend that remain and down toward the exit.

The car we arrived in is directly in front of the entrance. Kyle stops us at the door of the car and rounds on me.

“Do you think he believed it?” The cockiness in his tone answers his own question.

“Maybe,” I say.

“Then let’s make sure he does.” Final words before he leans in and captures my lips.

My mouth parts, giving in to his kiss. I expect it to be brief, but Kyle has other plans.

The next thing I know, my eyelids are falling closed and I’m falling into the kiss. The feel of his lips, arm, and body against mine are too good to pull away. Even with my mind yelling at me that this isn’t a good idea.

Kyle is the first to pull back. Then he surprises me again when he plants a kiss on my forehead. It’s tender and endearing. It confuses the hell out of me briefly, but then I remember …

He’s faking it.

As long as I can keep that reality at the forefront of my mind, I’ll be all right.
