Page 40 of Love Me

She presses her lips together and wrinkles her forehead. “It’s not you I’m worried about messing anything up.”

My mind flashes back to all of the mistakes I’ve made. How I’ve let my anger get the best of me at times. I’ve learned to control it, in a variety of ways. I won’t let any of my darkness impede our relationship.

Not again.

“I have a proposition,” I say.

She gives me a wary look. “Your propositions often end up with me doing something strange.”

“You’ll be doing something strange tonight,” I mumble.

“What?”

“Nothing. Back to the money, first.”

“Diego—” She stops when I raise my hand.

“It’s yours. For your gallery. There’s no one in the world I trust more to put it to good use, and it will be wasted because I promise you I won’t touch it for anything else. So …” I draw out the word as I move closer to her, placing my finger under her chin to make her look up at me. “It’s yours. And in return you’ll give me three months.”

She blinks and then blinks again. “Three months for what?”

“To let me show you how good it can be between us. Three months to make you love me.” I bend low and kiss her forehead, then the tip of her nose, each cheek, and finally her lips.

A miniature earthquake of a shiver runs through her. I run my thumb along the seam of her bottom lip, noticing the slight tremble.

“Three months. And if things don’t work out, we’ll go back to being just friends.” It’s a complete lie. I know it but I say it because I know it will give her some sense of security.

“Three months?”

I nod, again, knowing it’s a fucking lie. I’m not going anywhere in three months and I’m sure as hell not letting her go anywhere.

Pushing out a breath, she glances around the hotel suite. “You planned this, didn’t you?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Each word is punctuated by me taking a step forward.

She takes steps backward until her back hits the wall.

I bracket her in with my arms. “Is that a yes?”

“You know you’re the only person I can’t say no to.” Her eyes fall to my lips.

By now my cock is straining against the zipper of my pants to be free.

“I know,” I tell her, a cocky smile on my face.

“But if once the three months are up and it’s not working out, we can go back to being just friends. And I’ll pay you back the money.”

“Abso-fucking-lutely not. The money is yours either way.”

“You’re such a pain in my ass,” she gripes.

Letting out a laugh, I bend low, meeting her eyes. “I should be a gentleman and say that I’m okay with taking things slow.”

I press my face into the crook of her neck, inhaling the floral scent. She’s worn the same perfume for years. I get her a bottle of it every year on her birthday.

Her natural sweet smell mixes with the perfume to create a scent I can’t get enough of. I would say I want to bottle it up to carry it around with me always but there’s the chance I’d lose it. And some other fucker could find it and know exactly what her scent is.

That ridiculous thought pisses me off.
