But they still knew the other one would tell them the fully unvarnished truth. Which meant when he pushed her, and she went with it, he could trust that she was okay.

He knew she was not afraid of him. He knew that she trusted him as well. He was going to deliver on absolutely everything Becca wanted and needed.

It’d been harder than hell holding back this long. They’d been interrupted for the big night twice because he’d wanted it to be perfect. But he was done with that. She was done too. Obviously.

Tonight was not perfect and she could change her mind at any point, of course, but barring anofrom her, he wasn’t going to be able to hold back anymore.

“Okay,” she said. She looked around.

“Over by the window.”

He’d spotted Savannah right away. The fact that Savannah hadn’t come over to them told him a lot as well. Savannah also trusted him. And that was definitely saying something. Savannah was a ball buster. She also loved Becca fully and unconditionally. If she thought Beau was bad for her friend, she would definitely let him know.

Becca started in that direction.

A moment later he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned. Luke Swanson stood there.

“You better treat her right. There’s a line waiting for when you fuck it up. And I’m at the front.”

Yeah, Beau knew that. He almost admired the guy’s balls for saying so, however.

“You’ll never measure up after me, Swanson. I promise you that.”

Luke cocked a brow. “Aren’t you supposed to say something likeI’m not going to fuck it up?OrI’m the last guy Becca will ever be with?”

Probably. But hell, Beau had known, even before he’d kissed Becca in her childhood bedroom when they’d started this crazy dating thing, that this wasn’t going to last.

He was going to enjoy the hell out of it while it did, though.

“You had your chance, and you were too stupid to take it,” Beau told Luke. Which was true. Becca had wanted Luke to ask her out for the entire semester they’d been lab partners or whatever. “You’re too late.”

“We’ll see,” Luke said.

Sure. Swanson could think that. But Beau was going to makedamned surethat Becca knew how a boyfriend should treat her. And that she hadveryhigh standards for sex when she and Beau called it quits. That was not going to work in Luke Swanson’s favor.

Beau was also going to make sure that he and Becca would always be friends. So when she said something about Luke asking her out in the future, Beau would make sure to dissuade her.

He wouldn’t be an asshole about their breakup, though. He wouldn’t make her cry. He wouldn’t beg her to reconsider. He would say he understood—because he would—and he would tell her that he’d always be there for her and that he’d miss the hell out of her and that if any other guy ever treated her as less than a princess, she’d better let him know.

And then he’d say goodbye.

And get rip-roaring drunk. At least three nights in a row.

Becca rejoined them just then. He put his hand on the back of her neck and they started toward the door.

“I don’t even get a goodbye?” Luke called after them.

Beau kept Becca moving toward the door, but he looked back. “Oh, you’ll get a goodbye from her eventually. One that will really matter.”

They made it all the way out to his truck before Becca asked, “What was that?”

“Just me and Luke coming to an understanding.”

“Fighting over me?”

That made Beau’s heart squeeze. He wouldn’t fight Luke over her. If Becca wanted someone else, he’d let her go. He would always give Becca whatever she wanted.

“We just had a talk,” he told her. He reached for the passenger side door and pulled it open.
