“Always.” Dave leaned in to give him a soft kiss. “We both know very well that unexplainable stuff happens.”

“Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff since I got to know Demetrius and Cody.”

“My brother tends to bring that out in people.”

“Among other things,” Oliver said, rolling his eyes.

Dave chuckled. “True.”

He checked to make sure the car was untouched then followed Oliver back into the room, leaving the door open. It was mid-afternoon, so they ate a lunch of cold cut sandwiches with bags of chips and drank down a couple of iced teas each. Dave dug a shallow latrine ditch just beyond the front line of trees which they both made use of, and afterward washed up with bar soap and water from one of the jugs Dave had brought with them.

Oliver suggested a walk to check out the surrounding area in the daylight, but Dave didn’t want to leave their belongings unattended for too long. After some discussion, they decided to lock the most valuable and needed items in the car, and Dave pocketed the keys. He folded a tiny scrap of paper and, as he pulled the door closed, slid it between the door and frame just below the middle hinge.

“Clever,” Oliver said in a quiet voice. “Are you part of some kind of super-secret spy organization I’m not aware of?”

“If I told you, then it wouldn’t be super secret, would it?”

“Smart ass,” Oliver muttered.

“I know you like my ass,” Dave said as he led the way around the side of the motel to the trail they’d followed the night before.

“This is true. It’s a very nice specimen.”

They followed the path a good distance into the woods, pausing now and then so Oliver could take photos or jot down notes. The trees closed in around them, the path narrowing until they had to turn sideways in order to pass.

“End of the line,” Dave said as he came to a stop.

Oliver waved away a cloud of bugs, then slapped the back of his neck. “Yeah, if anyone else is out here, they’re probably drained of blood by now.”

“Sounds like a job for my brother and Demetrius.”

Oliver snorted a laugh. “True.” He frantically batted a hand at a large buzzing fly. “Okay, let’s head back.”

Dave waved away bugs that swarmed before his face. “Lead the way.”

They were tormented by a wide variety of bugs, which encouraged them to move even faster than before. In short time, they’d stepped out of the woods and hurried around the corner of the motel, complaining loudly about the bugs.

The door to their room was closed, the slip of paper still wedged in the frame, and Dave was cautiously relieved no one had been inside. Once in the room, he closed the door then leaned back against it. Oliver performed a frenzied dance on the other side of the bed, running his hands through his hair and over his arms and the back of his neck.

“I feel like they’re all over me,” Oliver said as he continued to flail his arms.

“Perfect time for us to clean up. Come on.”

Dave closed the door and propped the chair underneath. He picked up two of the jugs of water he’d brought from home and went into the bathroom. The tub was grimy, so he returned to the main room and grabbed a second tarp, smaller than the one he’d spread over the mattress. A lot of rustling and crackling later, he had it draped over the tub.

Oliver raised his eyebrows. “Are we supposed to sit on that?”

Dave grinned. “No. I didn’t bring enough water for a full bath. But we can help each other clean up.”

Oliver grinned. “I like the way you’re thinking.”

Dave pulled off his t-shirt and approached Oliver. He carefully removed Oliver’s glasses and set them aside, then cupped his face between his palms and smiled at him. Oliver looked up at him, his blue eyes wide and his lips soft and irresistible. His sandy red hair stuck up in places from where he’d run his hands through it, giving him an adorably disheveled look, which was heightened by three days of matching stubble along his jaw. Dave leaned in for a soft, sweet kiss that quickly turned more urgent. Oliver parted his lips and slid his tongue into Dave’s mouth, the feel of it familiar and still incredibly erotic even after all this time together. He loved Oliver’s body as much as he loved his mind, and he didn’t think he’d ever get his fill of Oliver’s lips and tongue.

Oliver ran his hands through the hair on Dave’s chest, pinching and flicking his nipples before putting his arms around him for a tight hug. Dave kissed the side of Oliver’s neck and ran his tongue around his ear before dipping it quickly inside, then stepped back and peeled Oliver’s sweaty t-shirt off him.

“Okay, we both stink pretty bad,” Oliver said. “Let’s get cleaned up before we take this any farther.”

“Good idea.”
