“All right. I’ll see you boys later. Come hungry.”

“You know Cody’s always hungry, so I don’t think that’ll be a problem.”

Demetrius ended the call and, with the money handled for the moment, decided to use the time he had available to clean the office. It was a lot easier to do without Cody or Jugs around messing things up right after he’d cleaned, and he definitely needed to work off some energy.

* * *

Jugs had offered to drive his pickup, and Cody gladly accepted. Cody pushed the seat back, grousing about Agatha’s short legs, then adjusted the vents so the air conditioning blew in his face.

“You done changing every little detail over there?” Jugs said.

“Just about.” Cody made a small adjustment to one of the vents. “There. Now I’m done.”

“Great,” Jugs said drily. “I’m so happy.”

Cody turned in the seat to face him. “So, how are things with you and Aggie?”

Jugs gave him a side eye. “We’re good, thanks.”

“Like, good good?”

“Yeah, like good good.” Jugs turned his head to fully look at him. “What are you getting at?”

“I’m just checking in, you know? Being a good friend and making sure my friend is happy in his relationship. That’s all.”

“Okay. Yes, I’m happy. Agatha’s happy. We’re all just as happy as we could be.” Jugs blew out a breath. “Happy, happy, happy.”

“See, that right there makes me think everything isn’t all happy sunshine and rainbow sprinkles in your house.”

“We are happy,” Jugs said, waving a hand as he talked. “But could we be happier? Probably. I know I’d feel a hell of a lot better if I were making more money.” He held up a hand. “Not that I’m not grateful for the work and the insurance and all you’ve done for me.”

“Don’t worry, I get it.” Cody sighed. “I wish the business was doing better. This legal bullshit has really hit us hard.”

“I still can’t believe it. You got bit yourself and nearly turned. I was in the hospital after being scratched by one of them, and nearly turned myself. And Agatha drove you all through a zombie uprising to the hospital to get the serum into medical hands. It’s crazy how people keep looking to put blame somewhere other than where it should be.”

“Yeah.” Cody picked at the hem of his cargo shorts. “Speaking of blame, any updates on Aggie’s dad?”

Jugs’s expression tightened. “Nope. He’s in the wind.”

“Again,” Cody said.

“Again.”

“Only this time he didn’t send us a big thank you check.”

“If only, right?” Jugs looked over. “Where the hell am I going?”

“Oh, right. I’m navigating. Hold on.”

Cody checked the map application on his phone. “Turn right up here.”

“Here?” Jugs slowed.

“No, up a little bit.”

Jugs slowed at the next intersection. “Turn here?”

“No, farther up.”
