“Okay, we can help you out, Mr…?”

“Oh, Sykes. Devin Sykes.”

Demetrius asked for some more details, took down Devin’s address and phone number, and hung up.

“Job?” Cody asked.

“Yep.” Demetrius typed the address and number into a text message and sent it to Cody’s phone. “I just sent you the address.”

“Is that a one person job?” Jugs asked before taking the last bite of his sandwich.

“I’m thinking it’s a two person job,” Demetrius said. “All the guy said was there’s something in his wall.”

“Yep, definitely a two person job.” Cody got to his feet and gathered his keys and phone. “Let’s go, Jugs.”

“I’m coming.” Jugs wiped his mouth and looked at Demetrius. “Okay if I leave Enid Helen here?” The dog had lifted her head at the sound of her name.

“Sure, that’s fine. Will I need to feed her or anything while you’re gone?”

“She won’t eat again until this evening. I hope to hell it doesn’t take us that long.”

“You and me both.” Cody approached Demetrius and leaned down to give him a soft kiss. “See you later, scamp.”

Demetrius watched them go, then looked over at Enid Helen. She blinked as she studied him with her bright dark eyes.

“You’re okay, girl. We’ll hold down the fort.”

He opened the accounting software and, with a deep breath in and a long, slow breath out, started looking at accounts. The longer he worked, the worse he felt, but after trying some different transfer amounts between accounts and making notes, he was satisfied he’d found a way to keep them solvent another month. Maybe.

His mobile phone buzzed, and he smiled when he looked at the display. Amelia.

“Hi Aunt Amelia.”

“Hello Demetrius. How are you today?”

“I’m doing well, thanks. How are you and Otis doing?”

“We’re doing just fine, thank you. What are you and that handsome husband of yours up to?”

“Oh, just catching critters and all that stuff.”

“Any unusual critters lately?”

“Not really. Just the standard possums and squirrels and raccoons.”

“Well, hopefully you get a chance to catch something new soon.”

“As long as it’s not skunks, I’m all for it.”

They both laughed at that, even as Demetrius winced at the memory. So painful.

“I was inspired today and made a ham dinner with far too much food, so I wanted to see if you and Cody had any dinner plans.”

“That’s very kind of you. As a matter of fact, we don’t,” Demetrius said. “He and Jugs are out on a job right now, but once they’re finished we can come out.”

“Oh, Jugs can come too, if he wants. There’s plenty of food.”

“I’ll invite him and let you know what he says.”
