Her lips? I couldn’t resist those.

Sometimes fate offered a second chance, and if you didn’t seize it right away, you would never get the opportunity again. I just needed to kiss her to help her heart remember mine.

She didn’t hesitate to open up to me, receiving my kiss with enthusiasm. I pulled back before it could go too far. “Why did you push me away?”

“I had to.” She frowned. “Shhhhhhhh. It’s a secret.”

A giggle followed her words.

Heather would never admit these things to me sober.

“I wish you would tell me.”

“I can’t.”

Fuck. Frustrated, I scrubbed a hand down my face.

Her fingers brushed my jaw. “I have to protect you.”

What the hell did that mean?

“I need to know, babe. It’s important.”

She shook her head. Long black eyelashes fluttered.

“I’m sorry, Heather.”

“For?”

“I should have tried harder to find out why you pulled away from me.”

“I wouldn’t let you.”

True.

“I don’t want to be away from you. It fucking sucks.”

“I don’t like it either,” she murmured.

“Then stop pushing me away.”

Her whispered response made me smile. “Kiss me.”

“I don’t think that’s a great idea.”

Her eyes were closed. She would fall asleep soon.

“I need to feel close to you. Help my heart remember. I don’t want to be lost anymore.”

“Lost?” I asked, confused about what she meant.

“Find me, Country. Keep me safe from them.”

Them? What was she talking about?

“Who?”

“The masked ones.”
