"The professor said he loved me too.”

“Are you comparing me to a sexual predator? Because I know he used his position to manipulate you into certain circumstances,” I say. “I have done nothing of the sort. Ever.”

“Of course I’m not comparing you to him, but she’s young. She may not even understand fully what she wants yet,” she says. “Have you thought about that?”

"Young doesn’t mean she is immature. Besides, we are not living your story. And she’s not a teenager, she is a full grown woman of twenty-five years old, and she deserves to be respected and looked upon as such.” A part of me might feel like I don’t deserve her because I know she deserves someone better than me, who doesn’t have the fucking baggage I’m carrying around. Someone who can be trusting and nice and soft.

But I’m who she has. It’s my child she’s carrying, and I’ll be damned if I don’t try to be the best possible person for her.

“She’s pregnant,” I say. “It’s my kid. And I don't plan on letting her go. Ever.”

My sister senses the finality in my tone and she nods, resigned.

“Fine. Then I want to meet her,” she says.

“Meet who?” Jonah White walks in on our conversation.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

“I was in the neighborhood,” he mentions, slipping into a seat. “And saw your sister, so I thought I should say hi.”

"Nice to see you again, Jonah,” Melly says wryly.

“Hello, beautiful.” He winks at her, and even though she rolls her eyes, there’s a light blush on her cheeks.

I look between the two of them. Is there something going on here that I should worry about?

But Jonah tears his eyes away from her and says, “So, what is this meeting about?”

Melly raises her eyebrow and I shake my head at her.

Amusement and mischief flash in her eyes, suddenly reminding me of her shenanigans when we were younger. She always loved to blurt out my secrets to Jonah for no reason.

“Well, your friend here thinks he's in love with a woman who is way younger than him,” she says.

“Who? Delilah?” Jonah glances at me with a growing smile. “You mean, he finally admitted it?”

Melly eyes widen. "Wait, you know about this?”

“Of course…" Jonah responds. "I pretty much watched it all go down. Are you guys getting food? I'm starving."

Melly looks annoyed. "Why didn't you say anything about it?”

“Anything like what?”

"I mean, why didn’t you stop him?"

"Why would I?" Jonah seems genuinely confounded.

"She’s only twenty-five," Melly argues, crossing her arms. “Do you think that’s appropriate?"

“Why not?” Jonah shrugs. “My Hannah was nearly ten years older than me."

“But..."

“Plus, I don’t think it’s fair that you’re judging her based on her age alone,” he adds, his expression going serious for a few seconds. "You assume because she’s young, she doesn't know anything about life, but you've never even met her. You don't know what she's been through, and neither do I, but from what I've seen, she's a very mature young woman. A balanced and really amazingadultwoman. She can choose who she wants to love."

There's a beat of silence following Jonah's speech during which Melly looks thoughtful.
