"Yes, but why does that matter?"

His hand wraps around my waist pulling me closer. His eyes glow with affection as he says, "Because this house is going to be ours one day."

I gape at him and he smirks.

There are so many things I want to ask, but the first thing out of my mouth is, "I never took you for someone who likes living so close to the city."

"I don’t," he says. "But I figure close to the city is probably better for you."

"Why?"

He shakes his head and then releases me. Then he takes my hand and leads me back out to the porch, pointing to the cottage by the street.

"See that?"

"Yeah," I answer.

"Would make an excellent bakery, wouldn't it?"

I turn to him to see if he's serious, and though his eyes are sparkling with humor, I know he's not pulling my leg on this one.

"For real?" I ask, elation bubbling through me.

"Yup," he responds.

"But...but..." I shake my head, coming back down to earth. "I know nothing about running a business. I just got my job, I'm not ready for this yet."

"Hey, relax. I know, you’re not ready." He runs a soothing hand down my back. "But I got the place, so in case you’re ever ready, this place will be here for you to do whatever you want with. And I do mean anything, even on the off chance I'm not here."

I frown at him. "You plan on leaving?"

"Not a chance," he says. "But I bought it in your name. It's yours to do with as you wish."

I spin around and would have fallen over, had he not caught me. I gape at him again and he laughs. But I'm so astounded it takes me a full minute to process it.

After everything he just said to me and all that he said about his mother, I didn’t expect this. This is....a lot of trust. This is making himself vulnerable to a woman. This is...this is...

Love,my mind volunteers. This is him being in love with you.

"Thank you," I say, and the tears break free out of my eyes. "Thank you so much."

He smiles and wipes away a trickle with his thumb. "I love you."

"I love you too."

Chapter Twenty Four

Oliver

Fuck

Fuck fuck fuck.

As I pace, I can feel the nerves tightening the back of my spine. There's tension in my stomach too and I feel a little nauseous and very much out of control.

A scream rips through the air and it takes everything inside me to keep from charging into the delivery room again. I already got kicked out because I nearly fought the doctor the first time she screamed. And though no one in that room could have dragged me away from her, the pained look on her face was enough to do it, because I knew that at that point I was doing more harm than good.
