Smiling, Annie got up. “Let’s have dessert!”

Riley watched anxiously as Vivian leaned forward and pressed a few keys.

“Folder closed, Riley. Annie? What can I do to help?”

Aunt Janice also turned away to help Annie while Craig and Aiden moved closer to Mitch.

“Mommy,” Dylan mumbled.

“Let’s get you some water,” Riley said. Her cousin and brother and Mitch were deep in conversation; surely nobody would open the folder on her laptop while she was gone? With a last glance in their direction, she took Dylan to the kitchen.

Chapter Nine

While Craig andAiden were talking, he noticed Janice approaching Riley’s laptop again.

She winked as she caught his eye. “I’m a sucker for weddings. I just have to look at these gorgeous ones again. Beautiful reminders of a special day. Mitch, do you know where to look?”

Shaking his head, Mitch walked over to her. “Let me see…”

But one of Janice’s fingers was already pressing down on a button. “Oh, look, Mitch, there are more photos of you here.”

“Aunt Janice!” Vivian called from the kitchen. “We need your opinion on something.”

“Excuse me, dear.” Janice winked as she walked away.

Mitch barely heard her. His eyes were on the photograph on the laptop. It was of him but not one he’d seen before.

He clicked on the next one and the next. What the—Every single picture was of him. Annie was in one or two, Dylan in quite a few, but he was the focus in every single picture. And there were many. Closing the folder, he saw the name.Something stupid. So photos of him were the something stupid?

“Still looking at wedding pictures?” Janice teased as she came back from the kitchen.

Quickly, he closed the laptop. “Riley did a great job, don’t you think?”

“That she did. Which ones were you looking at? Show me?”

“Well…” he began not quite sure what to say, but fortunately Annie called them back to the table for dessert at that moment.

Janice cocked her head as she looked at Mitch. “What I would like to know, though, is which photo has put that stunned smile on your face.”

She didn’t wait for him to answer, but with a definite glint in her eye, turned around and joined the rest of the family at the table.

Could she have known about the photos? Nah, he didn’t think so, although… Shaking his head he joined the rest of the family around the table.

He wouldn’t put anything beyond Janice.

Riley watched asDylan drank a glass of water. Only then he was happy to be put down.

“Riley, Dylan!” Vivian called before she appeared in the kitchen door. “It’s time for dessert. Come on.” Taking Dylan’s hand, she looked at Riley. “Everything okay? You look… rattled.”

Riley smiled. “Everything is fine. Dylan was thirsty.”

As they entered the dining room, Riley searched for Mitch. He was still standing in front of her computer. Their eyes met.

She didn’t have to ask—the look in his eye confirmed her worst fears—he’d seen the photos. It wasn’t quite clear how he’d discovered it, but he’d seen it.

Everyone else was already sitting around the table.
