Before she could move closer to talk to Mitch, though, Aiden got up from his chair at the table and called everyone’s attention.

“Riley, Mitch, come on, sit down. We have news.” Smiling broadly, he took Vivian’s hand in his. “We were going to tell you tomorrow, but then Riley arrived, and Annie invited everyone for lunch, and well…”

“We’re pregnant!” Vivian called out.

“And my wife stole my moment.” Aiden chuckled, bending down to kiss his wife.

For a moment there was a stunned silence.

Aunt Janice burst into tears. “I’m so happy!” She sniffled before jumping up to congratulate them.

It took a beat longer for Riley to grasp what her brother and his wife had said. She met Aiden’s bright eyes. Wiping her own wet ones, she rushed to the happy couple. “So happy for you!”

While everyone was congratulating the couple, Craig brought a bottle of bubbly and glasses. “Vivian can’t have any, but I’m quite happy to have an extra glass for the team.” He grinned.

Still dazed, Riley went back to her chair. Her brother had always been so adamant he was never going to marry, but during a visit to Marietta, he’d met the lovely doctor in the ER, and now look at him. He was married to Vivian, he was obviously very happy, and they were going to have a baby.

Dylan tugged at her sleeve. “What’s pregnant, Mommy?”

Everyone chuckled, waiting for Riley to explain. “It means Uncle Aiden and Aunt Vivian are going to have a baby,” Riley said. She’d learned a while ago never to go into too much detail.

Dylan’s eyes widened, and he looked at the two. “’Cause they kissed and had a wedding and Uncle Aiden is her husband?”

“He asked about husbands earlier today,” Aunt Janice told everyone. “Made an interesting observation, too.”

“Yes,” Riley told Dylan. “And because they love each other.”

The little boy’s gaze went to Craig and Annie. “So, are Uncle Craig and Aunt Annie also having a baby?”

Annie laughed. “Not yet, Dylan, but one of these days, we hope.”

Dylan’s gaze landed on Riley. “So, Mommy, if Uncle Mitch is your…”

“Dylan, no!” Riley called out just in time to stop her son from saying something that was bound to make an awkward situation even more awkward. Jumping up, she took Dylan’s hand. “Come on, let me get you some more juice.”

Quite a few chuckles followed Riley and Dylan as she quickly made her way to the kitchen.

“Are you mad at me?” Dylan asked, his bottom lip quivering.

“No, sweetie, it’s just…” How did she explain to her four-year-old he shouldn’t be talking about husbands in front of Mitch of all people?

“So, can I ask Uncle Mitch if he will be your husband?”

Groaning, Riley crouched down in front of her son. “Please don’t talk about husbands, okay?”

Dylan stared at her with big, blue eyes. “But if you don’t get a husband, we can’t get a baby.”

Her little boy was way too perceptive and quick to draw conclusions. “You and I are very happy by ourselves; we don’t need anyone else. What about that juice?”

“’Kay,” Dylan said, his shoulders slumping.

As she got up, a movement at the door made her look in that direction. Her eyes met Mitch’s. He was leaning against one of the kitchen cupboards, watching them. Probably heard everything.

“You also want juice?” she asked as she poured some for Dylan.

“I’m fine, thanks.”

Dylan took a few sips from the cup before he put the glass down. “Thank you, Mommy.” Husbands fortunately forgotten for the moment, he ran back to the dining room.
