His head moved back and forth slowly. “No, you don’t. Let me help you relax.” His hand brushed lightly across her forehead and down her cheek, resting on her chin. He rubbed his fingers over her lips.

Her lips separated as she gasped for breath.

Then their lips met.

His hand went to her neck again, but this time gripped hard and pulled her against him. She moaned as the kiss became more intense. Need took over, and she could no longer think. She wrapped her arms desperately around his body, clutching onto him, pulling him closer.

She was relaxed. Totally relaxed.

Someone cleared their throat, and another giggled.

Kristen and Jacob. Shit.

Stacey reluctantly pulled away and quickly got herself together, though not much space came between them. “I think you need to meet my brother and bestie,” she whispered breathlessly.

He placed another kiss on her lips, soft and sweet, then pulled them up to stand.

Tristan shook hands with both of them. “Nice to meet you, Jacob. And, Kristen, we sort of met before, but this time’s official.”

“Nice to finally meet you, officially.” Kristen shook his hand and gave him a once over.

Noticing, Tristan put his arms out and walked slowly in a circle. “You approve, I hope.”

Kristen nodded. “Yeah, looks good. And Stacey was right. You’ve got a nice ass.”

Stacey’s face was bright red. She covered it with her hands. “Oh. My. God!”

Jacob chuckled playfully and walked to her. “Since this is an interrogation, tell me, do you have a record we need to know about?” He slipped his arm around Stacey’s shoulders. “How about any illegitimate children?”

“What the hell, Jacob!” She elbowed his side.

“Ouch! Stace.” He stepped away, rubbing his side, and laughing. “Both important questions. I’ve gotta look out for you.”

“You both wonder why I didn’t want to bring him home. Please. Why didn’t you keep ravaging each other in your room?”

Kristen gave her a hug. “What, and miss the total fun of embarrassing you? Nah, we don’t get enough chances to do that. You’re too focused and serious. Let us have our fun.”

“Well, I’m glad you two came out here.” Tristan sat back down on the couch with Stacey cuddled at his side. “I’ve heard a lot about you both, and it’s great to finally meet you.”

The four of them sat and talked. College and pro sports, music, camping, lots of different things, and the guys had a lot in common. That’s probably why Stacey had such an easy time talking with Tristan. He was a lot like her brother.

The guys started spitting out sport statistics and their picks of who would make it to the playoffs. The girls rolled their eyes, excused themselves, and went into the kitchen to get more beers.

“Girl, I think I just lost Jacob to your boyfriend.”

Stacey placed the empty bottles in the trash and turned abruptly. “I told you, he’s not my boyfriend.”

Kristen waved her hands in the air. “I know, I know. You don’t do relationships. Blah, blah, blah. Noted. But with how your lips were tied together when we walked in, I’m thinking you’re re-thinking that aren’t you?” She leaned against the counter and crossed her arms. “Or are you still waiting for mister perfect to have a flaw, then you can dump him for being human?”

Stacey rolled her eyes and leaned across from her friend, taking the same stance. “I don’t do that. Everyone’s human. I know that.”

“Do you?” Kristen caught her eye and held on. “Seems to me your goal is to keep yourself lonely and miserable forever. You know Jacob and I are fine. We don’t need you mothering us.” She placed her hands on Stacey’s arms.

Stacey looked away.I don’t do that.

“Hey. It’s good. We’re good. It’s time for you to think of you. Tristan seems to really like you. Just try and see where it goes. It might be worth it.” Kristen waited until their eyes met. “Hey, forget the shitheads in your past.” Stacey tried to look away, but Kristen grabbed her shoulders and held her in place. “I know the one made it hard for you to trust guys. He tore your heart out and stomped all over it. I was there. I remember. But they aren’t all like him and it’s about damn time you realize that. You’ve held Tristan at arm’s length—well farther than that—for how long, and he’s still here. Give yourself permission to love someone again.”

Tears fell down Stacey’s cheeks. Kristin was an awesome friend. Stacey wrapped her arms around her neck and squeezed. “What would I do without you?” She sniffed.
