“Probably live a long, lonely life as an old cat lady.”

Stacey pulled away and wiped at her face. She handed two beers to Kristen and took two for them. “I don’t have any cats.”

“Not yet. You’re too young to be an old cat lady. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn to that.”

Stacey breathed in deep. She felt better, and Kristen was right. She needed to try and see where things went. They went back into the living room. The guys had moved on from football to the local minor league team. It seemed as if they were planning a night out.

“Tristan said his uncle has rented a club deck at the minor league game. We can go. Food and drinks included. How awesome would that be?”

Stacey just stared at Tristan. Sounds expensive.Rented a club deck, owns a company. How big is this company?

Thankfully Kristen was never one to beat around the bush. “Wow. Rich much?”

“It’s work related,” Tristan said as he put his arm around Stacey’s shoulder and pulled her to his side. “Not a big deal. They do it at least once a season. It’s not until the end of April. I’ll find out the exact date and let y’all know.”

The guys continue their talk about sports, which puts Kristen to sleep. She was passed out on Jacob’s lap.

Stacey’s mind kept going back to the game. Tristan mentioned it’s not till the end of April. That’s over a month away. He was already seeing them lasting that long. Her heart had that squishy sensation again. She liked it and leaned against his chest.

He and Jacob were getting along and have a lot in common. She was enjoying listening to them talk. It was important for her that her brother liked who she was dating. He tended to be over protective and she didn’t blame him.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a loud snore coming from Kristen.

“Oh my God.” Stacey roared with laughter. “I’ve never heard her snore before.”

Jacob shot her a look. “If she hears you laughing at her, you’ll have to deal with her.”

Stacey tried her hardest to compose herself. “I can’t wait till tomorrow. I wish I videoed it.”

Jacob shook his head. “I guess I should get sleeping beauty to bed.” He shook her a little.

She woke up and stretched. “Yeah, I’m beat. And I wasn’t snoring, Stacey. I just breathe loud.”

“You heard me? Oh my God, you so were snoring. It sounded like a chain saw.” Stacey imitated a chain saw sound.

Kristen shot her a look of death. “Tristan, it was great to see you again. Take care of our girl. I might kill her in her sleep.”

Stacey wiggled her fingers in a wave. “Good night, chainsaw.”

Kristen gave her the finger.

Stacey walked Tristan to his car. The night was clear and cool. The wind was light.

“You cold?” he asked as he wrapped her in his arms.

“Just a little, but I’m sure you’ll warm me up.” If nothing else could, those eyes could. Her heart missed a beat as their gaze collided and melted into each other. “Your eyes change colors. Sometimes they’re so light gray, they’re almost blue. Sometimes gray, sometimes—like now—they’re really dark.”

“Yeah, from what I’ve been told I have my dad’s eyes. My mom used to dress me in gray shirts for family pictures. It made the gray of my eyes pop.”

He was wearing a gray shirt now. He usually did. “Is that why you wear a lot of grays? Because of your mom?”

He nodded.

Stacey smiled and pointed to the deck. “See all those potted flowers? My mom and I always filled pots with lots of colors. When she died, it’s what helped me through the days and weeks. My grandmother came by all the time with flowers and dirt. We would plant different ones. It was my therapy.”

“You don’t talk about your grandmother much except in your memories of your parents. Why not?” They both were leaning on Tristan’s truck.

“She had to go into a nursing home a few years ago. She passed away, I guess it’s been almost three years. Jacob and I are all we have left.” Her shoulders became heavy, but she pushed them back.
