Jacob nodded in acknowledgment. His mouth full.

“I tried calling to let you know I was on my way, but you never answered. You were sleeping and looked like an angel.” He winked at her.

Her heart skipped a beat.

He glanced at his phone. “And yep, it’s seven-thirty.” He turned his phone to her.

“Wow. I slept all day. Now I’ll never sleep tonight.” She glanced at Tristan. Heat radiated throughout her body. “Guess I’ll have to find something else to keep me occupied.”

She saw his throat constrict when he swallowed. “Don’t tease me. That’s not nice.”

“Who says I’m teasing?” Tingling traveled from her head to her feet.

“Okay, you two. Enough. Your brother’s in the room.” Jacob stood up. “Who could use a beer? I could use a beer.”

He looked at Tristan then Stacey. “Either of you want a beer?”

Tristan chuckled. “Sure, bring us both one.”

Jacob gave him a thumbs up and left returning quickly with a beer for everyone.

Stacey ate in silence observing her favorite people. Kristen and Jacob were so comfortable together. A small smile played on her lips. Friends and lovers. It was written all over them. It was sweet how easily they reacted to each other and finished each other’s thoughts. She covered a yawn.Wake up already. Her eyes wandered to Tristan, who talked with Jacob and Kristen easily. It felt right having him here and interacting with them.

He was dressed in shorts and a gray t-shirt tonight, which was untucked, and his hair was messed up like he had his windows open on his drive over. She reached over to run her fingers through his hair, flattening it out. He turned toward her, his eyes smiling. Had she only known him a handful of months? It seemed like so much longer. She put her plate down and leaned into him. He wrapped his arm around her, and a sigh escaped from her lips. She was content.

The four of them decided to watch a movie, and the guys quickly agreed on the newest horror movie they could find. Stacey and Kristen adamantly opposed that decision, and a small—yet playful—argument broke out. The girls lost and squished together in the middle of the couch, and Stacey grabbed the closest blanket.

Tristan watched as the girls wrapped the blanket tightly around them. His brows shot up in amusement. “You two know we’re here, right? Stacey, you can move toward me. I’ll keep you safe.”

Stacey shot a quick look at him and whispered. “You don’t understand what it takes to stay safe during a horror movie. Kristen does.”

“Yeah, if you want us to watch, we can’t trust you guys to help us. You’re guys.” Kristen agreed as she hid her face under the blanket but kept one eye out, so she didn’t miss anything.

Jacob leaned back. “Ignore them. It’s like they’re one person sometimes. They do their own thing. You gotta get used to it.”

Tristan gave him a thumbs up and chuckled as he got comfortable in the corner.

Two hours later, the movie was over, and the guys were cleaning up because the girls needed a potty break and had to go together. You never know what might jump out of the shower. When the girls came back to the living room, everything was cleaned up, and the TV was off.

“I see you made it out of the bathroom safe.” Tristan pulled Stacey to him.

Kristen clutched Jacob. “Yes, we did. It’s been fun, but we need to go, or I’ll never get to sleep before him.” She pulled him toward his room.

“Who said anything about sleeping? I’ll get your mind off the movie, and the monsters under the bed.” He followed behind her. “Good night, you two. It was fun.” He raised a hand in a wave.

Tristan wrapped his arms around Stacey. “Those two are great together.”

She smiled. “Yeah, they are. I’m glad they’re finally happy. They deserve it.”

He brushed the hair from her face. “What about you? You deserve to be happy, too.”

Her smile faded. “You’re right.” Her hands got sweaty. She pulled away from him. “And I am.” She wiped them on her shorts and sat on the couch.

Tristan blew out a breath. “There you go closing up again.”

“What do you mean?” She wrapped her arms across her body. “I’m not closing up.”

Tristan reached over and unwrapped her arms, holding her hands tightly in his. “Jacob told me you never put yourself first and spend way too much time worrying about him and Kristen.”
