“What’s up?” She’s felt this from him before. There’s something he’s not saying.

Just then, someone pounded on the window behind Stacey, and she about jumped out of her skin. She yelped.

Adler opened the door. “Come on you two. We thought you’d never show up. Dancing’s started, and you almost missed eating.”

They both climbed out.

Adler placed an arm over Stacey. “Scare you?”

She narrowed her eyes into slits, and she elbowed him hard in the side. “Just a little. Jerk.”

His laughter was contagious. “So, how’d you like the meadow?”

Tristan moved some hair from her neck.

She turned toward him. “It was amazing.” A buzz went through her skin as she remembered the feeling of the breeze on her bare stomach, the rush of their slow lovemaking.

Tristan winked.

“Yep, I’m sure you had tons of fun just riding. Anyway, you have one more obstacle to make it through.” Adler’s arm went around Desiree. “My mom is waiting to meet the girl who captured her amazing nephew’s heart.”

Stacey felt nerves crawl through her. She knew Tristan was close to his aunt. “Come on. I want to get this over with. I’m sure she’ll be great.” Stacey pulled Tristan’s hand to follow Adler and Desiree.

But he held her back.

She turned to look at him. She was ready to go. The look on his face froze her in her tracks. Why wasn’t he looking her in the eye? “You’re avoiding looking at me, Tristan. What’s wrong?” Her heart thumped hard against her chest.

His hands grabbed her arms. “Stacey, I…I should have told you something sooner.” His eyes flicked to the movement behind Stacey.

She watched as his body seemed to deflate. “Tristan? What’s wrong?” She spun, and her heart stopped. What the hell? Her eyes blinked rapidly. Adler, Desiree, and a tall, thin, dark-haired beauty were walking toward them.

“Well, hello. I’m surprised to see you here. Ms. Kempt. Am I right?”

Dr. Bitchy in the flesh. Why was she here? She looked between Dr. Bitchy, or Hensley and Adler. Their hair color was the same, but not much else. But then she smiled. And it was there Adler resembled her.

Stacey turned to Tristan. Her hand rubbed the side of her neck. Why was she here? She needed some answers. She watched as a look of dread passed between Tristan and Adler. Adler pinched his lips.

Dr. Hensley broke the silence. “So, what a pleasant surprise. You’re the one who caught my nephew’s heart.”

Elie turned to Tristan. “You didn’t tell me your girl was a nurse. It never dawned on you I might know her?”

Stacey finally got her bearings and felt her heart harden. Tristan knew who she was having problems with but never said anything. He kept this from her. Fury flooded her heart. Stacey closed her eyes and released her breath. When she opened them, they grabbed onto Tristan’s. “Dr. Hensley, he knew. He just never said anything.”

Fear flashed in Tristan’s eyes.

Her heart picked up. He deceived her. What the hell? He kept this from me. He lied. How stupid could I be to think he was different?

“Well, maybe we can talk about your interview sometime tonight. Go grab yourselves some food and enjoy the rest of the night.” Dr. Hensley smiled before she walked away.

The four of them stood silently.

Stacey couldn’t take her eyes off Tristan. What did she just witness? Her insides were a churning pile of molten mess, but she refused to back down.

He finally looked away.

Adler was the one who broke the silence. “I guess you didn’t get around to telling her.” Tristan’s head shot up, and he glared at his cousin.

Adler lifted his hands in surrender. “Come on, Des. Let’s grab some food.”
