“I’m enjoying myself right now,” I said, hoping that was the answer hewanted.

Whether it was or not, I couldn’t tell. He sipped on his coffee his features completely devoid ofemotion.

He was a difficult man to read, he kept his body language to a minimum, and there were times when I wasn’t sure what he meant when he spoke. I thought I was telling him what he wanted to hear, but like then, there were times when I thought I’d gotten it wrong. I wished he would open up, but I was too scared to ask himto.

The waiter placed our bill on the table, without looking at it he laid his credit card on top. I would have liked to delay the evening a little longer. I wasn’t looking forward to returning to my emptyapartment.

“I did something the other day,” I said, as we stood and walked to the restaurantdoor.

“What?”

“I bought somethings.”

He shrugged his shoulders. “I think you’re going to have to give me aclue.”

We walked to where he had parked thecar.

“Sex toys,” I said. He stopped and looked at me. His smile grewbroad.

“Sex toys, huh? Whatkind?”

“I can’t say here, someone mighthear.”

“And when will thesethingsbe delivered? I assume you didn’t walk into a store and buythem.”

“I ordered them on line andtomorrow.”

“Then allow me to help you unpackthem.”

He opened the car door and helped me in. I laughed as he took his place behind the steeringwheel.

“What happened to that shy, worthless, inadequatewoman I met just a month ago?” hesaid.

There was a pause as he started the car and pulled out on theroad.

“You happened,” I said,quietly.

Gabriella appearedat my office door the following day. Although immaculately dressed, as normal, there was something ‘off’ abouther.

“Hi, I wondered if you’d like some lunch then a trip over to Canary Wharf today?” shesaid.

“I’d love to. I’ll be honest; I’m pretty much done here. I’d like to move as soon as possible. Scott is being a totalarse.”

“I heard about your exchange. He wasencouragedto tender his resignation, did youknow?”

“I didn’t,no.”

“It’s for the best. So, shall wego?”

I rose from my seat and collected my handbag. She had a car waiting on the double yellow lines outside. We slid in the back and she gave an address to thedriver.

“I hear you met the delightful Addison,” shesaid.

“I did, although I did think she was delightful at the time. Until Mackenzie told me aboutthem.”

“She’s a vampire, Lauren, be very careful around her. Don’t give her anything she can use to hurt you, she’ll bleed you dry. All she’s after is money, from whoever she can get it to maintain a lifestyle she believes shedeserves.”
