Chapter 22

Lauren?iu

“Hey, no need to kneel on my account.”

In the dark of night, Lauren?iu shoots his head up, and Daisy excitedly bounces over to Paimon, rising to meet his open arms as he embraces her, and she licks his face.

With a curt nod, Adrian states, “It’s you. Good.”

Remaining on the ground as Daisy lowers herself and Paimon approaches him, Lauren?iu starts, “I...”

Paimon reaches a hand to help Lauren?iu up. “Let’s just kill your dickhead ex, right?”

Lauren?iu gives a breathy laugh and takes his hand. “Right.” When he stands, he doesn’t immediately let go of Paimon.

Adrian shakes their head.

“We can change into mist, though the silver.”

Paimon offers a sly grin. “How about I just teleport us inside? Past all the nasty wires and cameras.”

Lauren?iu replies, “That works, too.”

Paimon snaps, and they’re inside a dim bedroom that is painted placidly blue. It’s an exceedingly ordinary room.

And in the bed are two men.

Anthony, unchanged.

His lover.

His only friend.

His companion.

His enemy.

So peacefully asleep and sweetly dreaming.

The three of them stand at the end of the footboard.

Hand on his chin, Paimon suggests, “We could just kill them now.”

Adrian rolls their eyes. “Please. What’s the fun in that?”

Lauren?iu observes the couple in bed. Both no longer young, but one more different than the other.

The husband is older, likely now in his sixties while Anthony hasn’t changed at all, and rather than doubting his resolve, Lauren?iu’s fury multiplies. Not growing old together—but having full decades of romance, it must’ve beennice.

Anthony has even trained himself to sleep at night. For this man. Not Lauren?iu.

Adrian picks their eyeteeth with a thumb before saying, “This is boring.”

Then, Lauren?iu and Paimon can’t even stop them, can only look at each other with mildly shocked expressions, as Adrian floats above the bed and hovers over the husband, the vampire hunter who bedded his enemy. Though vampires don’t need to breathe, they can draw air into their lungs, so Adrian does a deep inhale and blows on the man’s face.

With crossed arms, Paimon sighs as the two men startle awake, and Adrian floats backwards to rejoin them. “Young people these days, just jumping right into things.”

Both the men launch out of bed.
