Kinsley wanted nothing more than to sit at the opposite end of the table, but the other stone-colored lady caught her eye and pointed to the seat opposite Kian.

Great,she thought to herself.

She didn’t even have the baby to distract her from her unearned misery.

But she trudged over and sat, determined that the grumpy warrior wasn’t going to ruin a square meal for her when she wasn’t sure when the next one was coming.

“Got the wee one off to sleep, eh, soldier?” the woman with the scar was teasing Kian. “What a mission.”

“Hi there,” the other one said to Kinsley. “I’m Avril, and that’s Lyslee.”

“Well met,” Lyslee said.

“Nice to meet you both,” Kinsley said.

“We’re just ribbing your handsome guard, “Lyslee said. “We know watching over a small one is worthy labor.”

“Thanks,” Kinsley said. “But I haven’t actually done much of it yet. I only met her this morning. I haven’t even named her yet.”

“Oh, give her a good Grummish name,” Avril said excitedly. “It will lend her strength.”

“Harmmwyll,” Lyslee suggested.

“Or Jynio,” Avril put in.

Kinsley glanced at Kian to see what he thought, but he was frowning as usual. She imagined it was anopesort of frown.

“I’ll definitely keep Grummish names in mind,” she said to the women, who smiled approvingly before turning their attention back to Kian.

“Arrows or cudgels?” Lyslee asked Kian.

“Do you have to ask?” he joked, flexing his biceps.

Kinsley felt her cheeks heating at the sight of his obscenely enormous, bulging muscles.

And she wanted to crawl across the table and claw Lyslee’s eyes out for the approving way she was looking at him.

“Staff or sword?” Kian asked Lyslee.

“Both, when I can get my hands on them,” Lyslee said, her voice a low purr.

Kian roared with laughter.

Kinsley grit her teeth. The question hadn’t exactly sounded suggestive, but the answer definitely was.

She stared down at her empty plate, feeling helpless with fury.

Why was she feeling this way over a guard? Sure, he was handsome, and she had always fantasized about dragons.

But they’d never even had a heart-to-heart talk, much less kissed or gotten involved. He was literally a handsome stranger. What right was it of hers to be jealous and angry right now?

Lyslee was big and gorgeous, just like Kian. And they had their warrior status in common. She should be happy for them, and hoping they would have a passel of green and gray children to bring them joy.

“Aren’t we missing someone,” Kinsley asked, remembering the catlike person from earlier. She hadn’t seen much of him at all.

“You mean the scout, Cloud-on-the-Mountaintop?” asked Bill as he approached the table. “He doesn’t like to be cooped up, so he takes his meals outside.”

She couldn’t imagine wanting to be out in the cold like that. But then, she wasn’t covered with fur like he was. At this point, she sort of envied the solitude.
