What I want is to pull him off that horse and push him down in the grass and churned earth, straddle him, press my mouth to him, then tear that skirt off him and put my mouth on his cock, suck and bathed it with my tongue until he comes, until the whirlwind dies and something new is born.

Then Taj whoops, breaking through the loop of lusty thoughts. “Let’s go! To the south!”

“Yes, let’s go,” I whisper, shaking my head to clear it, curling an arm around my aching middle. Casting the gray town with its Temple banner and Kiaran’s awful family one last glance, I turn my horse to the south. “Let’s find our Finnen.”

ARIADNE

“Hey.” Kiaran has finally slowed down and I dig my heels into my horse’s sides, urging it to go faster until I’m riding beside my Wildman. “Everything okay?”

Kiaran shoots me a quick look, then at Taj who is riding a few paces away, his face revealing nothing. He looks perfectly normal once more. Well, apart from the remnants of the blue dress still clinging to his body. Perfectly human.

Makes me wonder whether I imagined things.

“I bet they’ve never seen anyone like you in these parts,” I say, trying for light. “They’ll weave stories about you, tell their grandchildren about the day a Drakoryas chased the guards away from their town gate.”

He’s still silent. Our horses are walking slowly. Soon we’ll have to make camp, let them graze and rest.

He worries me. He hasn’t spoken a word since he galloped out of the town and told us to ride.

“That was brave,” I try again. “You gave us a chance to ride away. Faced them all on your own. That was impressive, and you—”

“I went berserk.”

Those three quiet words are harsh and jagged.

“You saved our lives. Allowed us to leave the town.” Something in his expression makes me ask, “Has it happened before?”

“No.”

“Ah.” Now I understand his silence. “But you—”

“I wanted to kill them. Crush their skulls in my hand. See their blood flow.”

“Right. About that—”

“You were angry,” Taj says, riding closer to us. “Weren’t you?”

Kiaran glances at him, nods.

“Why?”

“I have to protect you.”

“This isn’t the usual bloodlust,” Taj says. “This is your alpha’s protective instinct toward your omega and alpha mates kicking in.”

“You know everything, huh?” Kiaran scowls at him, then looks down at his hands on the pommel of the saddle.

“I know enough. To induce the battle craze, they give Drakoryas mead and powder of echevon. Just because you grew up like a wild animal doesn’t mean you’re any different physiologically from any other man, Kia. But being an alpha sharing a bond with an omega and other alphas, that… that changes you. It’s not just you. Any one of us could have gotten the bloodlust. Only you are more… open to your emotions.”

“What the hell do you mean?” Kiaran snarls.

“You are readier than the rest of us to enter this bond. You may not be always able to name your emotions, but you don’t fight them because your family, your society or your superiors told you so, like we do. You have this advantage over us.”

“Emotions… are no advantage,” he mutters and still looks troubled. “And you don’t really know… how I feel. You talk and talk, but have no idea.”

“Whatever,” Taj mutters, frowning.
