“Rude. I was talking to Lea. Filling her in on the whole Nee situation.”

“And she gave you a hickey over the phone?”

“What?” Fox’s fingers moved to his neck, a smile spreading across his face and his eyes fluttering closed as if he was remembering the hickey-giving moment.

“I thought things were over with you two,” I asked, realizing that I’d been so caught up in myself and my pain recently I’d been a shit friend.

Fox shrugged. “It’s complicated.”

Charlie cocked his eyebrow, opening his mouth to say something, but Fox leaped in before he got a chance. “If you mention sharing her, I will end you.”

Holding his hands in the air, Charlie said, “Hey, we’ve shared girls before and it’s never been a problem. It’s not my fault she hypnotized you with that tight pussy of hers and made you fall for her. Anyway, I’m more of a one woman man these days.”

“Until you get bored.”

“Fuck off.”

“Boys!” I jumped in before this got out of hand. “Shall we sound check before the crowd shows up, thinking we’ve gone back to those unprofessional assholes we were for the last few months?”

“You mean you two were?” Fox fired back sarcastically.

“Yeap, while you were obviously getting up to no good with someone linked to the band. Shall we take bets on who?”

Just then, Dawson walked onto the stage. Dressed in a skin tight t-shirt that readLet the music playand hugged every muscle on his upper body, he pushed his hand through his wavy, dark blond hair that was just long enough to fall over his eyes as he moved toward us.

“Hey, boys. You ready for tonight? These people have been waiting a long time for you to come back to Miami, so don’t fuck it up.” Dawson’s eyes moved between me and Charlie, but then his gaze reached Fox and he paused, licking his lips like he wanted to devour him.

I coughed, trying to push down the smug sound wanting to escape my chest as I realized exactly who had put the hickey on Fox’s neck.

“Hey Dawson, do you know who Fox here has been messing about with? I think we need to buy them lunch so they stop feeding on his neck?” I asked, unable to resist. I could barely stifle my laugh as I watched his blue eyes flare and his cheeks flush while he avoided looking at us, like a guilty child who had gotten caught stealing sweets.

“I’ve got better things to do with my time than keep a list of who Fox here has fucked. Plus, it would be so long it wouldn’t fit on the tour bus.”

“You haven’t got enough paper or lead in your pencil,” Fox jeered, giving Dawson a cold, hard stare that was so unlike our chilled friend that it was obvious how fake their whole dislike for each other was.

“Sorry to interrupt, but we need to get this done so we can check the lights next. You ready?” the sound guy asked.

“We’re good, Hal,” Charlie replied before we started our sound check.

“Lea wants to fly out to see Nee. Do you think she’d be up for it?”

I pulled on the boots I was wearing tonight, tying the laces as Fox and I chatted. “Honestly, I don’t know. Plus, we’re leaving in the morning.”

“Yeah, about that…”

“We can’t cancel the rest of this trip. We’re in enough trouble with Neo and Addi. There is no way they will go for any more crap from us.”

“I know, I know. I just… once we’re done, I thought we could take a break.”

Panic flashed across my face. “What do you mean by a break? You want a week off, or are you talking about splitting up?”

“And there can’t be anything in between? No middle ground? Dickhead. I just meant rather than saying yes to every event we get invited to and all the PR we do, we could retreat, write, maybe hit the studio and play around with some sounds like we used to do. The last few months… years even, have felt like a lot and I love what we do, but I’m loving it less every day.”

“Has this got anything to do with Lea or Dawson?”

“What?” his face crumpled. “No… and what’s Dawson got to do with anything? You know I can’t stand the bloke. He’s a prick. No, I just wanna spend some time at home, play with my new niece, write some songs and not have to live with you two idiots every day.”

“And it has nothing to do with the person who gave you the hickey.”
