Chapter 30

Archer

“Okay, maybeMiami’snotthat bad,” I admitted. “I guess I can’t blame a whole city for what happened here last time.”

“You’re so fickle,” Fox laughed. “Who wants a drink?”

“Hell, yes,” Charlie shouted, spinning manically around the green room, hyper as usual from the adrenalin of being on stage.

“Sounds good. I’m just going to grab my phone.” Leaving them to sort the drinks, I went back to my dressing room, pulling my phone from my bag. I’d not turned it on since our sound check and I was desperate to message Nee. Rubbing the back of my neck, I waited for it to power back on, surprised when the notification sound pinged again and again.

Lea: Eek. I can’t believe you found her. I’m calling her right now. Thanks for her number.

Marshall: We had a problem with a crowd, but we sorted it and took Ionee home.

Nee: Is that what life with you was like? Was that how I got hurt?

Nee: Aardvark? How did you know I’d choose that?

Marshall: She doesn’t want to stay. Is that ok with you?

Marshall: Call me ASAP when you’re done on stage.

Marshall: We’re on the move. I’ll call you when we arrive.

What the fuck?

I’d hired Marshall and his team the minute I’d left Nee’s house yesterday. I’d let her get hurt once and then let her convince me that no one cared about her unless she was with me, but I knew that wasn’t true. They’d want to get to her, to get to me. I’d intended to tell her, but I wanted to wait a few days before I freaked her out. It looked like they’d needed to step in before I’d gotten a chance and Marshall’s messages made me wonder if my worst fear had come true;she’d run again.

I tried his number, but it went straight to voicemail, making me curse as I hung up.

Dawson: All sorted. You can thank me later.

Me: ??

Feeling like my high from the gig was flatlining, I pushed my fingers through my hair and let out a huge sigh, trying Marshall again. This time it rang, but still no one answered. Spinning on my heel to go and find Fox and Charlie, I froze as I was met with the sight of Marshall filling the doorway with his enormous body.

“What the hell are you doing here? Didn’t I pay you not to let my girl out of your sight? Is she okay?”

“There was an incident on the beach. The press found her, but we got her back to the house.”

“And the photos?”

“Dealt with.”

“So where’s Nee? Have you left her home alone?”

Marshall dragged his hand over his face. “I’m sorry, Archer. She didn’t want to stay there.”

“So, where did you take her? And why would you leave her there alone?” Panic filled my throat, making me want to throw up.

He stepped to the side.

“Hey, Arch.”

Ionee stood in the doorway with a huge smile on her face. Dressed in jean shorts and a vest, she pulled two large suitcases and her art portfolio behind her.

“You couldn’t carry her bags?” I glared at Marshall.
