“I guess it’s not, but…”

“No. I won’t let you be less than a hundred percent happy. You deserve more.”

“You make me happy.”

“Imadeyou happy. Neither of us knows just how much I might have changed. I look like me, but maybe my surgery changed more than my memory. I mean, was I ever this snappy and bad tempered?”

Archer didn’t reply.

“Sorry, this is a lot. I know I’m a lot. One minute I can’t stop thinking about you and I want to follow you around the world while I get to know you again and other times I want to retreat back to my cave and live like I don’t know you’re out there. I’m giving you such mixed signals. I must be driving you mad. You’re probably regretting finding me.”

I stared at his image on my phone screen, his emotions written clearly in his expression; confusion, hurt, love. “You’re not driving me mad, but I get this is a lot. I didn’t expect you to fall back in love with me overnight. It will take time. It took time the first time. Don’t push yourself to feel something. We have two weeks on these buses. Let’s just have some fun. Why don’t we start with a date? Come on a date with me, Nee?”

My belly swirled with butterflies at the thought of being on a date with him. “I can do a date.”

“Perfect. How about tonight after the gig? You up for that?”

“Okay.”

“Right. Be ready to leave for the gig at 6 pm. I’ll have Marshall bring you and Lea, and then afterward, I have plans for us.”

“I’ll look forward to it.”

“Right, I need to go eat. Bye, Nee.”

“Bye, Arch. And thank you… for not thinking I’m a headcase.”

He winked before ending the call. Clutching the phone to my chest, I let out a contented sigh, wondering what I should wear on a date with a rock star.

Archer

We’dspentthedayon the buses traveling to Florida to play at The Tampa Sports Authority and although I was desperate to check on Nee, our conversation earlier had shown me that I needed to tread carefully. It was hard—she looked like my Nee, but she was so unsure of herself and that wasn’t something I was used to. I wanted to reassure her and make everything okay, but she was right. Coddling her wouldn’t work; my brave girl had to work out who she was again, and I needed to give her space to do just that.

She found me when we stepped off the buses around the back of the hotel, whispering, “Hey,” as she nudged her elbow into my side.

“Hey, yourself. How was your ride?”

“I had so much fun,” she admitted, her eyes dancing as she looked over at Lea, who was grinning right back at her.

I winked as Dawson herded us inside before the paparazzi found us.

“Right, girls,” Fox announced as we made our way into the six room penthouse suite Dawson had booked us. “We want to pamper you, so you’ll find a rail of clothes in your room for you to choose something from to wear tonight and there is a hair and make up stylist in there for you as well.”

“Fox!” Lea exclaimed. Before she could say another word, he leaned in, whispering something in her ear that made her eyes flash and her cheeks blush. Biting down on her lip, she nodded before he stepped back.

“Right, we have to go shower, change and sound check, but we’ll see you there.”

Ionee looked at me, her face tight with worry. “I can’t go. The lights. The noise. I know I’ll probably be fine, but I should be cautious. Seizures are still a real danger for me and loud noise really doesn’t agree with me. I’ll just stay here and you can tell me about it when you get back,” she offered, smiling at me sadly.

“Do you want to come?” I asked.

“Yes, I really do but…”

Dawson handed me a box that I passed to Nee. She opened them, letting out a small gasp. “We have spoken to our lighting team. We don’t have many flashing lights, but they have changed any sequences that might be too fast or we think might be an issue.”

“Arch, you don’t have to change your entire show for the girl with the scar on her head.”

“Shush. I’m not… I’m changing it for the woman I love so she can come and see me play. And Charlie and Fox are changing it for their friends… and that is meand you, just so you know.”
